hissingsid
So the MHK from down north Mr Johnson said on MR this morning the Isle of Man is going to see the end of cheap food. I don’t know what planet this man is on but the Isle of Man has never had cheap food, the cost of food on the Island has always been inflated. I am not complaining because I love living here, lived here all my life and there are areas where it is more costly to reside but to infer we have ever had cheap food leaves me wondering if our M.H.K s live in the real world . Perhaps his wife does all the food shopping.

I shop at ASDA and am continually surprised *but* am seeing price rises every time i do a weekly shop. I tend to buy relatively basic food although it's vegan which does put the price up. I do feel for those trying to finance a family atm with so many price rises across the board, but if you're a sensible person food isn't massively expensive.

Passing Time
What I find irritating is Tesco/shopshite forever price comparing to each other or Aldi or Lidl. Never mind price matching, beating their prices is the way to attract custom

They do live on another planet, sadly it’s not looking for those at the bottom end of society, but protecting his own and his former members interests.
2112
Sorry to sound cynical but I think farmers would rather sell swathes of their land to developers for housing estates than do something for the good of others.
jackwhite
I don't think food is cheap here either. Don't know direct comparison with UK for likes of Tesco but would imagine our costs will be even slightly higher due to shipping surely. Gladys
Food is cheap now, relatively. Certainly seems cheaper than it was when I was growing up, red meat was a treat and we were not poor by any stretch. It is probably down to intensive farming and improved pesticides and fertilisers. I suppose we need stats on percentage of average wages spent on food now compared to many years ago.

snowman
Tesco is dearer in isle of man. Use the Tesco grocery app, add stuff to basket, login and see the price change Will still use them ahead of Shoprite though

I think the term they use for expensive food these days is "artisan".

No neither can I but I do remember that a mid range washing machine was about £350.00 and a similar one will be about the same now, which I find staggering! (Chicken and food generally similar) We have lived with "cheap" food and goods for 30 + years now. Maybe Covid and a WW3 will make things cost what they actually cost? For younger people who think I am talking sh1t, ask your parents/ grandparents. The cost of things like bread, washing machines, cookers etc etc has not gone up with the 30+ years of inflation. You could say we have never had it so good? What has actually happened is that things that I mention have not gone up in price much BUT THERE ARE FAR MORE THINGS for people to waste their money on than there were 30+ years ago AND this is why people are short of money. No Mobiles, no satellite systems. No widescreen TVs. No fibre or copper wire Internet, No Sex toys, No Gyms, No Coffee shops, No electric bicycles, No Personal websites, No gaming systems online etc etc .................. Exclude them from being "essential" and people would "think" they were okay.......................
