I think Barlow has a very stereotypical view of the North of England. We’re I ever to return to the UK no doubt that is where I would choose to live ( the North West in particular)

Same here - nearest town is Falmouth, ~same size as Douglas. Rough sleepers well looked after by Cornwall Council and charities. Saw plenty of beggars in Zurich - well organised, mainly Romanians. I travel around the north just now, most weekdays and weekends, day and evening. But from what you are saying, it looks like we are inhabiting very different worlds. I wish I was winding you up but I'm not. One of my sons runs a business which, as far as I can make out involves writing specialist computer script for game designers and other programmers. He and his people specialise in sorting out bugs before the programme is released. He could have set up anywhere in the country. He chose Huddersfield where he bought the top floor of a disused mill for about six quid plus a huge renovation grant from Kirklees council. Having stunning countryside and great, very affordable housing in all directions, with Leeds, Bradford, Ilkley, the Dales and the Lakes on the doorstep suited him and his people. I have no idea what his views on beggars are but we've visited our grand children thousands of times and it never once occurred to me that the streets of Huddersfield are over run by beggars. To make this worse one of my daughters teaches at the University of Leeds. She lives in Horsforth. We visited her today because she's having her house renovated and wanted to discuss her plans with her mother. As we strolled around Leeds city centre I kept a look out for beggars. I did find one, or at least a young man sitting with what looked like his worldly goods in a doorway behind the Corn Exchange. He didn't ask me for any money but I put a couple of quid in the box on his lap. My daughter didn't approve saying it wasn't in his best interests, but then she's had plenty of money out of me and I never once set conditions on whatever she wanted to do with it. Maybe these beggars are everywhere in the North and I just don't notice them or maybe you've got some highly tuned beggar detection sense I lack. However, I just don't think they are there.

Totally agree I’ve spent loads of time in Leeds. The only beggar used to be the angry idiot who used to play the recorder with his nose just across from Banyan. But I suspect he died of Covid as I haven’t seen him since.
