We wondered when Ramsey Bakery bread rolls were not available in Tesco yesterday.

Not keen on buying imported bread, with all of the chemicals it contains.

At least Ramsey bread is natural flavour, rather than chemically induced flavour.

Apparently a large northern based employer has shut up shop today, at a guess gas and electricity prices now rendering it unviable.

I think their ovens are oil fired?

Laxey flour mills is a wholly owned Govt company i think

It is, and significantly subvented. I approached the Enterprise a few years ago with a business plan to diversify that site.

You can probably guess the rest.

What are these chemicals ? Ramsey bakery is a Chorleywood production facility, like so many UK bakeries.---https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chorleywood_bread_process

One observation I will make though is that they have done very little to freshen up their offerings over the years (excuse the pun). The range, packaging, marketing has been stuck for over 10 years. No special breads or changes to the recipe. Well not that I can think of.

True, although they changed the 'ramsey bakery, ramsey bakery, hot cross buns' radio ad this year...maybe that was their final downfall

"Flour usually contains a small amount of additives. Bleaching agents such as benzoyl peroxide are added to make the flour more white. Oxidizing agents (also known as improvers) such as potassium bromate, chlorine dioxide, and azodicarbonamide are added to enhance the baking quality of the flour. These agents are added in a few parts per million. Self-rising flour contains salt and a leavening agent such as calcium phosphate. It is used to make baked goods without the need to add yeast or baking powder. Most states require flour to contain added vitamins and minerals to replace those lost during milling. The most important of these are iron and the B vitamins, especially thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin."

Yum, yum.

These are added at the Laxey Mills, Manx flour is not great, lack of soil lime? and requires "improving"

You know it's serious when it wakes Alfie C from his weekend slumber.

Just meaningless words from CM. Government have known of the struggles within the hospitality business for the last two years and have done very little. They even paid PWC to produce a report then ignored it.

Not if you wanted a Government bailout. If rumours are true the threat of closure before TT week worked for the Steam Packet.

And maybe they should get one. Being on an island, sometimes at mercy to the weather, it would make more sense to have a propped up basic bread industry.

Or Noa can figure out how to make bread that doesn’t pull fillings, that could work too.

Alf ‘finger on the pulse’ Cannan.

Asleep at the Wheel ………. again. IOMG spend most of their time firefighting. Ramsey Bakery won’t be the first factory to close, I am sure others will follow, especially as it’s only weeks till TT.

Noa is artisan trendy bread. It’s hardly geared for mass production. It’s a luxury commodity, rather like Ramsey Bakery loaf at £1.63+. Hardly affordable to someone on benefits, it’s a luxury.

Who would buy a business that produces a product that can’t be manufactured and sold for anywhere near the price of its competitors which are produced in huge scale in the UK and sold for buttons?

This is classic IOM behaviour.  We want things local to protect jobs and supply when the boat doesn’t sail etc but people also want it at the same price they can buy a cheap loaf in Tesco.

It doesn’t work.  We are a small island with a small market and high costs.  You can’t have cheap goods and a higher minimum wage plus increasing general costs.

It is very basic, but most seem incapable of figuring it out.

Most of the people complaining now that the bakery is gone and that we are reliant on stuff being shipped in and that the knock on to the flour mill and farmers will be huge are the same idiots who want to buy a loaf for 60p

I consider bread at £1 or above as cheap. Spar shops sell Hovis and Roberts of Northwich bread. They will have to step up to fill the void.
