Tried to use my Clubmann card in Shoprite the other day. They looked at me as if I was some sort of lunatic.

I can't imagine where they got that idea:

Please note that from Monday 2nd April 2018, we will no longer be running our ClubMANN programme or accepting ClubMANN cards, to allow us to continue to invest in lower prices through our PriceWatch and Everyday Savings programmes.

And it was a waste of time for years before that.

Tesco in IOM is more expensive than UK. Check yourself in the app. Eg Pampers nappies

So I've checked as you suggested. Again, all of the main produce and grocery is the same price to the penny as here. Fruit, veg, frozen stuff, cooked meats, tinned stuff, beers, crisps, chocolate, cereals, etc. A couple of things were actually about 15% cheaper here on our last bill, so maybe they are just going up.

However, I have found an item that is more expensive. Seeing as you mentioned nappies, I wondered if it applies to the more bulky stuff, so I checked kitchen roll, and lo and behold, that IS 5% dearer here. So maybe bulk comes into it.

Anyway, I'm happy enough that the overwhelming majority of staple items are the same here as there, and as I said earlier, I think this is an excellent deal for us on the Island.

I wonder what the picture would look like now if Tesco had never arrived here. I wonder if they would have done had Shoprite not gone over there and tried to mix it with the big boys.

You are wrong about the beers or are you not counting special offers?

So I'm told, but I can only say the ones that we buy are the same price, and there are a few Aldi price matches too, so if some beers do vary, I'm not sure what criteria are being used.

If I want to shop quickly then that means self scanning as I go around the store. Rather than having stand in queue waiting to unpack and then repack everything like the olden days.

That’s not really shopping though is it?

If you go to a pub or restaurant do you tot up the bill yourself and then just hand over what it’s come to?

I really despair at the depersonalisation  of normal everyday experiences.

Society is falling apart.

work from home, drive yourself to the shop, walk round with your headphones in, self scan your microwave dinner, go home, socialise on your computer, sleep.

Self-scanning (using a handheld scanner as we go around the shop) is the logical extension of self-service. You might as well complain that you no longer have to ask the grocer to get stuff from behind the counter for you. Or that you have to fill your own car with petrol.

It is more convenient. Thanks to self-scanning I can pack my shopping in the right order as I go around the shop. Rather than having to try to pack it at the checkout. It's much less hassle - since I only have to load the stuff once. Rather than loading it into the trollery, then unloading it and then re loading it all.

Your analogy might make sense if self-scanning had replaced someone doing my shopping for me.

Has popping round the supermarket ever been particularly personal in many places?

You can still say hello to the machine if it  makes you feel better, and shrug awkwardly when you fumble your card into the reader
