Probably less than extra staff costs by having more tills open

I suppose so  Even Boots have moved to self service tills .

.Dealz did that but have closed them again and went back to actual tills ..

Wonder if shoplifting was a factor?

Self scanning is being driven by lack of money and nobody wanting to be embarrassed at the till when they don’t have enough money.

Yeah.  Much better to stand in the co-op in Crosby and have the worlds loudest self service till bellow “you payment has been declined” to the entire store.

Absolutely with you on that one Roger M, I was away recently in a Decathlon store where your stuff goes into a box automatically to be scanned and priced up, after payment I noticed a small item still in the corner of my trolley so I called over the shop assistant asking for help and to say I needed to pay for it ( not techie more a cash person) after getting help he was totally amazed and thanked me for my honesty which in it self tells a story.
