If businesses increase their prices people will go out less, cut down on leisure activities etc.  they cannot spend money they have not got .   Putting electricity prices up will have a lethal effect on the economy.

You’re not wrong. It’s hard enough now attracting people into restaurants. The latest increase may just finish a lot of small businesses

Sadly, they haven’t for quite a long time. None of our elected numpties have skin in the game so have no idea of the impact

Now that things are really starting to come home to roost, things are going to get really difficult.

There's only so far you can kick various political cans down various roads before you have to grasp the nettle and deal with the problem.

Various incarnations of Tynwald have bullshitted their way through dealing with the MEA debts. Now they've piled another C.£50m on top, the carpet just gets too lumpy once you've brushed a certain amount under it.

But it's all fine as we are saving the planet from extinction apparently, which means the great unwashed masses have to accept an ever lowering standard of living.

What will be interesting to watch is how they try to handle it. As disposable income shrinks and discretionary expenditure shifts more and more towards cheap online goods and services, the potential for tax revenues to fall faster than expected will they double down and try to increase stealth taxes and savings (raise pension ages, don't raise tax allowances) and continue to blame Brexit/Covid/Ukraine-Putin/weather for it.

Or will they keep raiding the piggy bank to protect themselves from the necessary decisions that are coming.

It seems ironic that in order to achieve sustainable energy we seem to have created an unsustainable economic position for a lot of people.

If one was cynical one might even consider the postponing hikes to April and July is in the meagre hope that Easter and TT will generate income for some businesses to withstand the shock of a 50% price rise. It might also be a cynical ploy to keep the inflation figures down.

It'll be like petrol prices, quick to rise and slow to fall. So we get price adjustments upwards every 3-4 months but it'll be 6-12 months again if they ever start to fall.

They could have, at any point when times were good, wiped the debt out by taking the money from reserves. The Government chose not to do this and now we are where we are.

Except they won't be coming down again.

Some will survive by cutting down on the menu offered, and opening hours. If the food is good, and the service is good they will survive. However, if electricity pricing still keeps increasing there comes a point where it is uneconomical to operate even if other factors are in your favour. Sadly our politicos will only look at packed restaurants on days like Mothers Day etc and praise themselves saying we can keep putting up charges, and the public will keep spending (without observing it’s always busy on Mothers Day etc as it’s a day in which people spend money ).

I think there are probably enough haves on the island to keep certain places open and as long as the upper echelon, (financially speaking), are happy, then that's all that the powers that be care about.

However much us lower financially blessed point out the obvious errors of judgement that will cost too much, are unnecessary or are ill conceived, those at the top don't seem to care, we have no say in the matter, no influence and don't have the ability to benefit the top dogs, ergo, we don't need to be made provision for.

Phew! That's better, I'm going to to have pork pie, crisps and salad with a cup of tea and a follow up of fruit cake...........common but oh so tasty. 😎😃

Businesses will survive in the same way the ones in the Uk have who have been paying more than us for their electric all winter.

Everyone knew there was a big increase coming in two steps with the first being in March, so anyone who hasn’t planned around it probably shouldn’t be in business anyway.
