The tender no doubt was to be given to the operator who was thought to do the best job. Such tender offers normally come with the caveat that the job would not necessarily be given to the cheapest tender or some other consideration. The writer says that the travel and stay accommodation costs put them at a disadvantage when competing for contracts in the UK. But that also applies to UK companies competing for contracts here. Some might say that the 10% weighted margin advantage on quotes already give Manx operators an unfair advantage. I think that’s about right though. At the end of the day it is for those putting out the tender to make the decision as to who they think would do the best job. If either of the other two Manx companies tendering had won the contract would the writer have anything to complain about? If unsuccessful would those companies be saying that they “ cannot exist in an environment with such odds against us”and give up the ghost. Or just accept that you won’t get every job you tender for, and not blame everyone else. During my lifetime I have been for job interviews and haven’t got the job. As have the overwhelming majority of people. Wasn’t he cry arsing about not getting a drone gig with the Police as well?

So maybe not a typical closure that could be reflective of an Island wide problem??? Actually that's what a typical closure would be. Businesses rarely close for one particular reason and these will be interacting anyway - someone might put off buying a new dress because a higher energy bill is expected for example. An uncertain business future might make someone less eager to renew a lease. But when the same factors are acting on the whole economy, there will be an increasing number of businesses closing caused by them, even if the specific combination will be different in each case and there will often be personal factors in the mix as well.
Mr Helmut Fromage
Even the charity shops are bailing out (they can't blame it on staffing costs as they're all volunteers.) https://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/save-the-children-to-leave-607533

Would have thought they'd be booming with everyone trying to save a penny or three. Maybe donations were down so there was fewer things to sell. Who will fill the empty shops if more start to go? Bookies?

If the majority of their earnings goes on costs, there is little left over to save children. The charity trustees will have to look at that and cut where they aren't making a return for the charitable purpose. hissingsid
There will be a lot more after the Summer Season which is about two weeks in June. The government should have subsidised the electricity for longer instead of giving 42 Ml. although I doubt it is that much now! for pie in the sky projects that they haven’t even decided on yet apart from a few windmills that may or may not materialise. It is still very cold and food is at a premium, heat and food are basic human rights. This is the worst government ever, we say this every time a new lot are elected but this present government are uncaring and not looking at the bigger picture.

Cannan has always known the cost of everything and the value of nothing. All of this was inevitable the second the MHKs chose him as Chief Minister. He’s cut from the same cloth as the shower of shite ruining the UK.
Barlow
Whatever you think of the government running UK just now, by sheer definition they are there because the opposition is even shitter. And never has that been so stark as now. The past few year of disaster after disaster has been allowed to happen because the opposition are full of no-chancers.
