Aren't most businesses on the island monopolised, from Steam Packet, to Telecom, Manx Utilities, and more??? When it comes to other things, such as hospitality, apparently it's "survival of the fittest". But when it comes to a "supermarket" that has been going backwards for years now, what do you do? Keep watching them put prices up for inferior produce?

Isle of Cartel is real.

Any takeover may require approval, part of a takeover could be to limit price difference to the UK. How can Tynwald intervene? Isn't Shoprite owned only by the NIcholsons? It's not a PLC is it? Omobono
Tesco express small stores are very successful in the UK but they rely on a much greater footfall and office workers buying lunch etc , than we have in most towns on the isle of Man , the energy and staff costs must have been a crippling factor for Shoprite especially where they have had 2 stores in one conurbation , and for years the policy has been to keep any retail opposition out ,
HiVibes
Meat Plant, Creamery, Flour Mills all now beholdant to Tesco. And no doubt they will expand the lines into clothing, consumer electronics, howeware etc knocking out what is left of local business.

Top tip, Manx Meats at Tesco are cheaper per kg than their own brand.

Chie
Shoprite were way overpriced. Tesco, while lacking in selection these days, still gives me 2-3 bags of shopping for £30 as opposed to Shoprites 1 bag. I just wish they would let Asda over here. For some reason Manx people have a fetish for Lidl. Having escaped the rock at one point for a few years, Asda is where it’s at. You get the George range of clothing, Asda own brand which is infinitely more tasty than tescos, smart price guarantee which they actually do stick to etc
