Yugh! You must never have had decent fish and chips😬

The Ramsey trawlerman and the Bourne plaice are far better IMO. After those 2 come cod and castle in peel.

The 3 amigos, chippy, port jack and the islander are all pretty poor I reckon. Mushy grey fish that does not seem fresh, undercooked batter and soggy undercut chips. Harry Ramsden would turn in his grave.

All a matter of personal taste though of course.

Harry Ramsden turned in his grave when they used his name for the National chain which served awful fish & chips.

im not going to travel to Port Erin, Port St Mary, Peel or Ramsey just for F&C.

If I’m there i agree the offering is better than Douglas.

as far as I’m aware Terrace, Islander, Port Jack were all in same ownership and got their supplies from same place.

I like plaice rather than cod or haddock. Go to Poppies or Hodsons when I’m in London.

When at Uni in Hull there was a chippy down the street which only cooked in beef dripping. Two of the proprietor’s sons were on the trawlers. So as well as cod/haddock we got plaice, sole, rock, bass, depending what they brought home.

What do you feel about the Port Erin chippy ?  While I've been to Ramsey for a meal at restaurants (vellikas and harbour view ) I've never eaten  fish and chips there . I've eaten a few times at the port Erin chippy .

Port Jack whilst still owned by same people is sublet to former manager, as far as I know.

Big loss to the island is Radcliffes closing ,people ,including me ,came from all over the Isle of Man  to buy their quality meats and poultry especially at Christmas , top quality friendly service and always a smile ,

they will be a huge loss to the retail sector in  Castletown

but doesn't this just about sum up whats happening in the Isle of Man , which in many peoples opinion  is quickly going down the pan  much of it to do with government  regulating  the place to death ,and destroying what was our traditional way of life

Probably more due to the education system, if this post is anything to go by!

I think you have hit the nail on the head. I did uni in Leeds and all the chippys used beef dripping and it was always haddock and not cod. Absolutely scrumptious. We dont go to Yorkshire much but always have Fish and chips.

You are right about Harry Ramsdens too

I went to PE. chip shop once with a group. Looked at the chips on other tables and ordered Jacket Potato!!!

no different to other chip shops but not to my taste!

Easy option Maris Pipers, re-constituted mash with a pale yellow outer that is never crispy! By the time you get them home in their paper wrapper, decidedly soggy.

I have ordered peas and curry sauce in a chip shop and made my own chips at home, air fryer or deep fried!!!

Has anyone made chips at home by the above methods and thought, 'these aren't as good as the chip shop' ???

Convenience?

I was brought up in the West Riding and no chippy would dream of using anything else then beef dripping
