It is a vital part of bringing people to the island and keeping them here, as well as enriching all of our lives, but as a direct contributor its tiny. They sell lots of stuff, newspapers are part and not a massive number. More likely a combination of rents, costs, long hours and small profits margins, same as many businesses here, CI and across UK. At one time a sub post office added on was the way to make it viable (the risk of being thrown in jail notwithstanding). Now even that is a millstone. So it has to be a convenience store opening all the hours God sends, preferably doing takeaway food, lottery and multiple other stuff too. And even then....... This is a bit like the Port St Mary one. Post Office and newsagents, its got a cash machine, sells all kinds of local stuff, eggs, honey, veg, cakes. Fishing gear too, and other assorted knick knacks. They've got some weirdly popular one day a week posh donut thing going on as well. The Port Erin one was better under the previous owners when it had the till in the middle. Good shop for the right people to take on though.
