Opportunity Missed?

Don't think France can be considered an impoverished nation.

I am open to other suggestions on why asylum seekers are fleeing France (or Belgium) on often-unseaworthy boats. There are probably multiple reasons - the relatively racist nature of big segments of the European Union, the search for a better life in the Anglo-world, and so on.

Having spent time in France there is certainly a more open sense of xenophobia.

France also has a much poorer welfare system and reduced opportunities. I still wouldn't call it an impoverished nation however.

That's fair - indeed, on average, it probably isn't that bad. It might be more accurate to say that big chunks of France are impoverished (certainly by comparison to British/Anglo-standards).

It is very likely that mainland Europe doesn't treat asylum seekers very well, certainly in the eyes of the people who are fleeing Europe to these Isles. After all, if France/Belgium was better than the UK, they likely wouldn't pay criminal people smugglers to move from France/Belgium to the UK.

The criminal invaders come to the UK for one thing only. The UK benefits.  Once in the UK and established they then import their families thus making a very bad situation very much worse.

There are elections coming up in the UK.

This so-called "policy" is a sop to all the morons who were gullible enough to think that the completely false "taking back control of our borders" would mean no more desperate folks in rubber boats landing on the south coast.

So they voted accordingly...

The idea that Australia or the UK is responsible for insufficient refugee camps at the point of origin in Afghanistan or Syria is as wrong-headed as the rest of your rant here. I do not know if you have ever met a refugee, but if you ever do have the privilege, I encourage you to speak to them and listen to their stories and understand the factors that cause their persecution.

I didn’t rant, and I didn’t mention refugee camps, sufficient or otherwise.

You don’t happen to read the Daily Mail by any chance, do you?

Actually no. Certainly not regularly.  But what has that got to do with anything?

'successfully deterred'

Fresh disturbance at Christmas Island detention centre due to 'inhumane' conditions, advocates say | Christmas Island | The Guardian

You really think that the Isle of Man is a better destination than Rwanda? For an asylum seeker?

Having the threat of the Island or Rwanda  to deter me crossing the channel I would be more scared of coming here due to our lack of medical Health and mental services, never mind our racist and, 20 year behind the times disability provisions.

They create a different part of the problem. It’s how the west deals with it subsequently that creates the smugglers, exploiters etc.

The problem starts in those countries where the indigenous fear for their lives. It's definitely worth mentioning the absolute reluctance, when it comes to Syrian, Iraqi and Iranian refugees, of the Middle East nations to take in their fair share of said refugees. You know, people who share the same culture, dare I say skin-colour and probably religious commonalities. Those affected wouldn't have to travel the long and dangerous distances controlled by criminal elements.

I'd hardly describe crossing the Channel by rubber boat as dangerous.  Met mid channel by our RNLI boats and escorted on to UK shore having been shadowed by French patrol boats up to being collected by our "RNLI taxis", probably less dangerous than an inadequacy crewed P&O ferry.

Whatever...

Lives have been lost attempting the crossing, that is a fact.
