Isle of Man Steam Packet - Recruitment

Steam Packet are desperate. A lot of the crew last year didn’t come back as Stena and DFDS pay better, they have accommodation on board, and pay flights to and from their places of residence, every couple of weeks. I understand that Steam Packet trawled the job centres of Liverpool prior to the season, I hope they are experienced and qualified seamen. It’s worth noting that the MCA prevented P&O Ferries ships from sailing due to staff accreditation and training issues.

DFDS don't pay better that's for sure. Stena do but crew have to arrange their own travel, IoMSP they do not.

The MCA issues with P&O were primarily ship deficiencies which almost certainly existed prior to the mass sacking. It was only due to gov leaning on them they acted.

Aye top job done by some of these Eastern European recruiters that is for sure!

It’s a mix of Baltic, Eastern European and Portuguese crew, but the ones I know have years experience and have their necessary and mandatory qualifications. I doubt some Manx would get out of bed for the pay what is on offer, due to being encouraged and told of the riches paid by egaming and the finance sector.

Yes the crew, sorry i was talking about the recruitment office dealing with this requirement. The crew are also really great on the both vessels and there is no denying that.

The rates they are offering and terms however are just awful and fully agree that Manxies would have any interest.

However the Steam Packet overall do have a good reputation which is why they still have some staff as opposed to little to no staff. They really need to improve their wages and benefits as well as working conditions.

if government had any sense they would be encouraging locals to take up a career in the shipping sector , they used to have a scheme  to assist deck and and engineering  cadets get a start   , but given the governments ownership of the Steam packet and its importance to the islands logistical links  you would think it would make sense to support  others who are interested in  getting involved in shipping and crewing related  occupations  ,who are vital to the well being and future of this Island ,

Yes you are quite right, around a lot of the British and EU seafarers working for Steam Packet is considered a really good position with actually very good terms etc.

This is absolutely spot on, more should be done to encourage Manx students to think about a career at sea or in the broader Maritime sector, especially with so many really reputable companies based on the Island.

These aren’t deck or engineering crew. They’re the stewards, serving in the lounges and cafe. Seasonal jobs. This isn’t new. It’s been going on 25 years and it’s the going rate. Lots of international competition. It’s the seagoing equivalent of waiting on.

The Baltic and Portuguese have been coming here for years. Even southern Germans. Our very own Amadeus started his Manx connection this way.

Its not bad, accommodation found, return fares and end of season bonus.

Nice idea but you'll find that in the modern economy, the majority of shipping crew worldwide tend to be recruited from countries with low/no minimum wages at a low hourly rate - typically from the former Eastern Europe and Asia. Encouraging Isle of Man residents to compete in a job market that's full of low-paid agency staff when there are a large number of better-paid on-island vacancies might not be in their best interest.

Works for Cal Mac however.

They fund the rating's and OBS (On board Services) training schemes for locals and still pay the best rates in the whole of the UK Ro-Ro sector.

They will be wanting people that are already trained and it can cost a lot for person to pay for thrashing and  pay for digs in the uk for just a few months work. Steam packet use to pay but I don’t think they do anymore.

Surely better to have your own crew trained and committed to the role.

Cal Mac have seasonal vessels and crew also who then pick up temp contracts in the off season but always return when the season starts and people are queuing out the door to work with them.
