It's all very well moaning about the private hire buses, we've drawn the cruise business in, we can't refuse to service it???

Can any other local coach company provide the service now? Do Tours have the fleet?

OK, it was manipulated by BV but the Govt should indicate to Tours that they can have the business next year and help them build up the fleet to do so.

In the meantime we're stuck with BV !!!

Tours have a surprisingly large fleet actually.

Malta bought ours on the cheap and cut the roofs off. Yet again it’s the case of it works everywhere else in the world except here.

What is that? A 1950s AEC Regent? Still working in the 1980s looking at the Fiesta driving past. That’s how our whole public sector used to work before it all got about management job creation and image. You bought something and you repaired it over its working life. If it still had legs after that time you spent a few quid repurposing it for something else. Now we give our money to Mercedes’ on a 5 year churn.

The problem isn't vehicles though but drivers.  A commercial company like Tours will have a small core of drivers (including management etc) but for outside their regular contract work they will rely on casual drivers to come in and work when required.  Normally this model works well because there are always some qualified people who are happy to do this this, being semi-retired or having other employment they can switch about.

But the problem is that Bus Vannin has tried to move to a variant of this model as well, but rather than accepting that they need the vast majority of their drivers as full-time employees to service their regular work, they have tried to move to using drivers on zero-hours to do such work as well.  So it means they are 'fishing in the same pool' as Tours and there simply aren't enough people to do the work.  So even if Tours were given the cruise work etc, at the moment they would be unable to find the people - or if they did Bus Vannin would end up with exactly the same problem that they do at the moment with not enough drivers to service even their already cut-back timetable.
