Staffing our border cost £2 million. Why?

But that was pre-covid. I thought you were going to reveal that they received financial assistance during Covid.

No they moved all the car parking that was previously on the site used for security etc over to Lord Street Car Park.  Presumably the money followed and went to the new owners who had been sold it on the understanding that they were building that new entertainment complex.  But continue to use it for car parking.

If you look at the FoI request (Case ID: 2413781; Title: Covid border costs), the staffing cost analysis is quite interesting:

Most of the work was actually done by existing civil servants.

The cash wasted on the elaborate vaccine centres, also appalling. All for the sake of some portable screens or curtains.

Now they are hesitant to dismantle the things and the airport looks a joke!

I am actually sick to death of hearing about the paralysing incompetence of our government, it’s a shameful disgrace! What happened to the auditor general, he could have saved us millions during the last two years alone, if he ever existed at all?

Sadly the auditor general usually comes in after the event and following the post mortem ,  usually  to bury the mistakes , whats lacking is the proper scrutiny when these schemes come to Tynwald , how in hell the liverpool  new landing stage  and waiting area with NO FREIGHT  or access after 10-30 at night ever got through , the members who voted this through  must have all been asleep at the wheel , , and  this £80 to £100 million  for the terminal   plus the cost of the new boat and additional fuel costs  will all have to be absorbed by the travelling public ,

To put it into context £1.582m is is 47 staff on £40k a year. Probably 40 or so if you include NI and pension costs or £6,300 per day! That seems very high when you think in respect of the boat you are generally getting a maximum of 3 arrivals per day but often only 2 and occasionally just one.  There were also limited flights. It is not as if each needed staffing more than a few hours a day.

for the much of that time

For two reasons. Firstly, when they originally voted the costs were far less. Secondly, they were advised the only alternative option was potentially loosing the ability to dock in Liverpool  for good. Based on those criteria they probably made the right decision. Certainly at the time, based on the public information, I thought they did the right thing.

If they knew then what we know now they may have made a different decision.

But the staff would be getting £20k-£25k a year, with the remainder going into the pockets of the recruitment agencies. #kickbacks

Err no. The £1.582m only relates to the "Public Services Commission Staff" and I restricted my comments to them

Were they? How so?

It’s a permanent government approved derelict site. IOMG won’t enforce any notices on the ‘developer’ neither will Douglas Council. It’s doubtful for the next 5 years that the site will ever be redeveloped, so it’s either going to be a car park, a ‘circus site’ or an ‘ice skating rink’ site. Maybe IOMG will buy the site back and with their usual customary fuck up style, pay over the odds and make a complete mess of things. And the winner is? Not the taxpayers!
