Certainly it shouldn't be used to make a point about race relations. Very much agree with this part of your post. A comment made in distressing times doesn't need echoing on social media by someone who is in the public eye and whose views people may tend to respect and give sway to.

Declan
Yes - Stu was paraphrasing. I don't think his use of boy was the racist use of boy. It's just the kind of thing a mother would say. That said, putting undue weight upon and drawing attention to an emotional outburst at a highly charged moment to make a point about "the race card" is flirting with racism.

Declan
You've made that point. I think he was paraphrasing and didn't check the correct quote and didn't think about the point you are raising. I doubt he would care.

There has been a case where a lad brutally attacked a woman in a church in Douglas (1970s) and was put on an attempted murder charge. He did similar to a woman in Blackberry Lane (1980s). Then in the 2000s ...was jailed after admitting a sickening sex attack on a woman in Douglas. During the assault, he grabbed her from behind and subjected her to a sustained and brutal attack during which she was repeatedly sexually assaulted, raped and beaten. "Openly" - is the problem here. Of course a racist MHK would deny he was racist.
Roger Mexico
The trouble as ever is in describing people as 'racist'. It's something that is almost impossible to prove and will never convince most of those so described, because they have even more faith in their own virtue even more than the most indulgent mother. What we need to look at is what people say and what they do, because words and actions can be more easily identified as racist. Perhaps Stu should think about why his reaction to reading that long and upsetting report was to highlight a particular part at the end and make a snidey remark about it. 11

Why do you think Manx Radio included the outburst? To provide a flavour of the moment in the court or prompt debate?

I started a thread about Implicit bias on the International news part of Manx Forums which I think tries to examine just this. or maybe not. manxfisherman
Still wondering where the mother said "he's a lovely boy". Oh that's right, it got made up, by an MHK.
