f1 drivers sit in a carbon fiber shell that protects them. tt riders are their own crumble zone. really time they stop chasing stupid records. nobody goves a shit if mcpint does it 1 mile faster this year. jyst make sure they all return safe and alive.

There are literally tens of thousands, if not more, people hoping to see a new outright lap record this year.

How on earth do you conclude that nobody gives a shit?

The lap record is dependent on several factors, weather, road conditions, machine set up, how a rider feels on the day, etc.

The MGP lap record has barely increased by 1 mph in over 20 years and yet the racing is invariably closer and more exciting than the TT.

The reason for this is that the winner always moves to the TT and the Senior is for Supersport machines only.

TT bikes are based on bikes you and I can buy, and arguably the ones that win will sell more bikes as a result.

Except they aren't. The 1000cc Sports bike sales category is miniscule now and what gets raced here pays only lip service to what the man in the street sees in the showroom. 600cc sportsbikes are no longer available, bar in small numbers intended for track only use. The 650 twins are dominated by a £50k+, limited production race "replica" that nobody will admit to knowing how many road going brethren have actually been sold. It now costs upwards of £30k to try and be competitive in the class because what they're built from wasn't intended to be raced, certainly in the inception. Sidecars aren't remotely relevant to anything in the market (other than racing sidecars perhaps) and are retained purely as part of tradition and the spectacle but they have their enemies too.

We have "evolved back" (ie gone full circle) to the reasons that the thoroughbred race machines were scrapped in the early noughties - we are racing things that aren't relevant to the mainstream market.

That's because the TT is no longer about the market; it's about a revenue generating spectacle with one or two people's perceived career aspirations thrown into the mix. That's where this blind obsession with increasing the lap records is coming from - and we saw the results of that on Bray Hill last year. Twice.

There's nothing in the TT superbike and supersport categories that you don't see in BSB or WSB. They're not bespoke bikes for the TT. Sidecars do differ from the F2 sidecar regs, though.

As for showrooms, if you discount scooters then the top selling bike is a 1250cc BMW.
