Just gone on to book a trip in October and found the prices quite acceptable

They usually are if you book in advance. Why on earth can't people get their heads around the fact that booking at short notice (or peak times obviously) is ALWAYS going to be expensive, its exactly the same with airlines and even with trains across. So stop bleating on about the fact that the Steamie is expensive, in any case at least any profits aren't going into the pockets of overseas shareholders, at least they are being put to good use funding vanity projects on the island (the last bit was an attempt at cynical humour).

But its  hard when someone has to travel away quickly , for a  funeral  for instance or see a sick relative ,  these are the things you can't plan for , but the pricing policy penalises  you , which is unfortunate , after all its not as if the ships are full of passengers every sailing ,

Peak times like school holidays? Aren't the government currently throwing money at attracting young working people to the island? The kind of people who may have school age children and therefore only able to go away during school holidays.
