Hooperman has been invisible so far. Great news. It's better to have one fully staffed ED centrally accesible to all residents than half and half. The Ramsey Unit was a nonsense. Given the area covered by RDCH it deserves greater investment to cater for this half of the island so we’re not reliant on one facility, especially given the recent pandemics the could potentially result in the scaling down and accessibility to Nobles. 2112
This island can’t staff its main hospital and it wants to grow its population. I dread to think how the island is going to cope, especially if there if there is another pandemic or serious health crisis.

Roger Mexico
A quick look at the actual story, shows that the Ramsey closure was planned (the story was issued early this morning) and only for today. It may possibly extend into tomorrow. As will the tendency of some people to get apocalyptic about the smallest things. 3 2

While RDCH may cover half the Island geographically, it covers only about a fifth of the population (ie Ramsey, the seven northernmost Parishes plus a bit). Everyone else is nearer to Nobles. And even those in the North may prefer to go there if they think it is something major enough that Nobles will have to treat. As for providing back-up, the problem (as here) is that there aren't enough resources to provide the basic service, never mind backup. Ramsey Cottage Hospital should be stripped down and anything useful transferred to Nobles. Build an extension at Nobles and sell off the Cottage site.

The range of facilities and treatments, as a community health centre, is wide. How’s it going to be cost effective to have capital spend and the extra running costs of things, like additional patient transport? Its not back up, and that’s not what we are being encouraged to use it for. The biggest problem with Nobles A&E ( and lots of other departments, including Ramsey ) is staff shortage. Combining Nobles and Ramsey won’t change that. However, that’s compounded, for A&E, by public misuse of A&E for things they should be seeing their GP, pharmacist or even self treating. 4
