Would be interested to know how many of the 35% were NI holiday CS on relocation packages. 😁😂

it must be costing a fortune and if they get away with removing work permits just watch the rates of pay in some sectors fall , we would be better off investing in training young locals for trades and  future employment opportunities   as well as making it easier to get a foot on the housing ladder , kids feel at present there is no future for them here !  o'h just put a few hundred thousand  subsidy   into building luxury apartments  for developers  , don't think thats the answer !

That will suit the middle and upper management and the likes but what’s not getting addressed is who’s going to serve and feed all this bigger earners in restaurants ,coffee shops and similar. Who can afford to come and live here in that sort of group? . Talk about a two tier society . It’s sad that powers that be seem oblivious of the need of the ordinary working people.

Well, the powers that be are those that inhabit the upper earnings categories so the ordinary working people are really of no consequence, until as such time it hits them personally.

Indeed.....

Business leaders have raised concerns about higher government wages adding to inflationary pressures.

Well, who would have thought, government fueling inflation?

I have never believed any of the consumer/price data that IOMG spouts.

Todays nonsense brought to you via the NPM (MR) is that the Starship Enterprise has paused plans to temporarily suspending work permits, in order for a further consultation exercise.

It wouldn’t matter how long the consultation exercise was, this policy is dead and at the first sign of unpopularity, and opposition, both IOMG and COMIN cave in, and more or less throw in the towel. If they retable the motion in 6 months time, the answer will probably be the same. The ironic thing is MHKs like Rob Callister obsessing with this area of concern, while making public pronouncements on the speed of the planning process, in his new role as head of the Planning Committee.

I assumed the planning role was offered to win his vote for the work permits changes.

Yes, but these relaxing of the regulations, are what you could describe as ‘flagship’ policy. Maybe they could have put it to the vote, or was CM Cannan convinced that he didn’t have the votes? What makes another one think that the HoK, would vote it through in another 6, 9 or 12 months? After all the shit to his reputation that Rob Callister put up with, a humiliating climb down and public apology, and now he is publicly rehabilitated. The question would be whether Rob Callister would still vote for the temporary suspension of work permits, or has bringing him in back into the fold ensured his vote for IOMG proposed legislation?

Rob Callister could make a great speech against suspending Work permits then vote for suspending work permits, he has voted for a recommendation against a motion he was moving, so in affect voted against his own motion. so anything is possible from Mr Callister.

If CM Cannan and the likes of Timbo the Starship Enterprise Minister can’t cajole or persuade other like minded people to their way of thinking, then I’m afraid their flagship policies are dead in the water. As has been proved, that new residents aren’t fully making the island their permanent home, just passing through for a few years, before on to bigger and better things either in the UK or further afield.

ETA - after a consultation period and no doubt many views and opinions on this truly polarising flagship policy, it’s amazing that so far, no form of compromise solution can be found, which takes many views and opinions into account. Are COMIN and CM Cannan going to experience resistance and every turn, if so, they may as well call a general election, and another CM elected - though I don’t think they would be a solution.

Chris Thomas has lost the plot!  How can he possibly claim to be acting in the best interests of the Island? 12 months of delay for what? Just comes across as being sore at being sacked for a 2nd time as a minister.

The only way to settle the debate and establish FACTS  is to allow the company that have the licence to drill the appraisal well.

It of course will be done under current UK regulations, which there is precedent for already in Manx waters, and to question the credentials of the company, he fundamentally shows a willing misunderstanding of the process. He full well knows the company will outsource the well management and operations to internationally recognised, experienced and established companies.

The gas either flows and the Island is rich or the gas doesn't flow, the well is plugged, the taxpayer is no worse off than it is now.
