Non-Believer
18 hours ago, Moghrey Mie said: Why did Treasury need another 40 people between 2018 and 2022? To manage the decline. It's been going on since 2009 so they'll want credit for managing the 1st nine years without any increase in staff. But in the last six years the decline got steeper so they needed more 🤭
Banker
https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/developers-hoping-to-move-onto-middlemarch-site-before-the-end-of-this-year/ this will be great to improve that area plus new villiers site developments, assume palace site will then become vacant and ripe for development, Tevir maybe alongside castle Mona? 2112
One piece of overlooked bad news, is 2024 is having less cruise ship arrivals. Last year there were 63 ships visited the island, this year 52 ships due to visit. There is a reduction of passenger visitors due from 32,000 from 2023, to 27,000 expected in 2024. No doubt our politicos will be making big plans and devising wish lists. Deepsea Pontoon? Cruise Liner Terminal?

Aren’t you one of those who complains that cruise passengers bring nothing to the island so assume it’s good news for you and the other anti everything brigade? That's a hell of a KPI right there. Only 95k visitors to go. Edited January 30 by english zloty

Needs a redraft, and should include operator reliability and availability as the number one challenge. Last year, like so many others, I ditched the plane, but now you can't be sure plan B will go, because the problem stretches far beyond the weather. Even when accepting you have to take a day or so, just in case days, around your main holiday. Staycation here we come 😫

Biosphere status seems to be an excuse to spend huge amounts of money on projects like sea grass transplanting and peat restoration. Proper change could be made, like banning dredging in Manx waters or reducing animal agriculture, but obviously these are unpalatable for most people.

I disagree with banning dredging/trawling as a managed fishery, this actually revitalise's the fishing grounds and allows other species to flourish. When an area of sea is left untouched for any length of time star fish etc. will take over and they will devastate a very large area of the sea bed very quickly and will kill everything in their path including lobsters scallops crabs, but like a field if left dormant it will grow unwanted plants weeds etc the seabed is no different and needs nurturing not left dormant.

2112
I see that Minister Allinson is in full on bullshit mode, especially on the local airwaves this morning. Grandstanding and dick waving regarding the IOM being better financially than the UK. Can he not keep quiet and get on with the job, instead of winding up other jurisdictions and establishment? I am afraid his stewardship of the Treasury hasn’t been glowing or majorly successful, islanders are feeling the pinch, frontline services are neglected, whilst funds are squandered on vanity projects. 1 4
CrazyDave
We had an enquiry at work this morning from a business who had been looking to setup in Exeter until last week. They are now looking at the economic situation in the UK and considering options. It was an interesting chat, and if others are having similar thoughts than it would suggest to me that now is exactly the time that Cannan and Alinson SHOULD be singing the island paradises and bigging us up as much as possible.
