It’d have been better all round if he’d said he wasn’t going to stand as soon as he got off his holidays. Now, we all know that about a third of the parliamentary party would have preferred him over Rishi. Rishi is clearly the right choice, but he is going to be leading a divided party until 2024, tops. None of them were technically candidates until nominations close tomorrow and they got/get 100 nominations. I get the feeling, despite the bravado, that Johnson realised he couldn’t reach 100. I don’t think Rishi will make it through to the end of the parliamentary term. The right, Mogg, Pritti, Suella, Francois, won’t be easy to control.
