I didn't say that at all.  I worked for a very long time in the "deep south" where many would have a dig at my northern accent.  I would reply that when the OED puts an R in "path" or "bath" I will pronounce it correctly.

There is a war happening in Europe (unleashed by a murderous maniac), a cost-of-living crisis impacting just about everybody bar the very wealthy, and to top it all off last Wednesday there were runs on the pound and UK gilts, which nearly decimated most of the UK pension fund industry. If the BoE did not step in, some older members of MF could have woken up this weekend being about 90% poorer. And the economic carnage is by no means over. FFS, this is such a perilous set of circumstances that many people have found themselves.

To endlessly wail about someone’s accent on Manx Radio seems like nothing more than 'out of touch' self-indulgence. It is really quite pathetic, IMHO.

The 'problem' with the newsreader isn't her problem or Manx Radio's problem... it's a problem that exists solely in the heads of a tiny number of fuck nuggets that think the news has to be read in a Costain's of Foxdul accent or the Queen's English. 

I would actually love Manx Radio to hire a few newsreaders with European accents and maybe a Ukrainian newsreader, solely because it would piss off those fuck nuggets. 

It's representative of life on the Isle of Man in 2022. We have a diverse population and it's a great thing in the most part.

Well I went looking thru the web site for a play again news and damned if I could find one!!! However, Chanelle Sukhoo is listed as S. African so I suppose she is the alleged guilty party~~? I have heard her conducting interviews on the news page and I thought she was Asian and perfectly understandable. Don't see ( or hear ) the problem!!!

How do you know they aren't?

Let me explain the problem.  The newsreader starts to read the news clearly and slowly but with some odd pronunciation, ears prick up because it is an unusual accent, perfectly understandable, but not Brummie, Scouse, Irish etc, so she must be foreign.

The news continues and the listener still suspects this is a foreigner but can't quite identify what kind.  Then the realisation dawns that she is probably not European and so is very foreign.  How dare they expect me to listen carefully until I get the gist of the accent? So you block it and then complain because you can't understand, but you haven't tried, you have just blocked it.

Now, if this was a thick southern Irish accent, I would guarantee that there would be very little you could understand, but that's OK because he is just from across the Irish sea.

The problem is with the listener, not the newsreader.  Yes, it may grate a little, and some of the English speaking newsreaders grate on me, especially if they pronounce 'th' as 'v', but they are not bad,  unintelligible newsreaders. 

I suspect this line of thought is more pronounced in the older generations.

Thick Irish still has English as a first language.  This lady doesn’t.

To be fair to her she is much more understandable now than when she first went on air a few more the ago.

The fact that we are still having this discussion several Months down the line just shows she shouldn’t have ever been on air.

I am also prepared to bet my life that there aren’t deaf people working on the 999 line

Maybe there is an issue with newsreaders speaking clearly on Manx Radio... I've just remembered that I heard them say DOI were going to take 20 weeks to install a speed bump on Victoria Street. Clearly that's not accurate... DOI would have to be epically taking the piss for that to be the case... so why did I hear 20 weeks instead of 2 weeks?

Does it matter what the first language is?  Coming from SA, it could well be that  English is her first language,  but certain words have an unfamiliar accent.   Like, say,  someone from Birmingham pronouncing basin like the huge animals what wander North America.   

Or it may be that another language is her first language and she has learnt English in school, probably gaining a better grasp of grammar than most of us.

And I would bet my favourite slug's life that there are deaf people working on the 999 lines.

How do you know that that English isn't her first language?  It's the first language of about 10% of South Africans (and about another 23% speak it as an additional language).  Just because she has what you experience as a strong accent, it may still be her first language, just as it could be for someone from Ireland.

Edited to add:  Her MR bio says she's from Durban, where about 50% of the population has English as their first language (second is Zulu with 33%).  So it doesn't seem unlikely.
