Schools close early for Christmas

In reality, this only benefits teachers and school staff. Anyone who is fortunate enough to be able to go away for Christmas will have already booked their travel a long time ago, will they not? In balance, it's not a particularly well thought through decision.

To quote Oscar Wilde "We obviously move in different circles".  Do you really think the the only people who travel for Christmas are the ultra-wealthy jetting off to their holiday homes in the sun?  Many families at all levels of wealth will be going to spend Christmas with with relatives in the UK - half the population were born off-Island after all, so many will still have parent etc there.  It may be the only holiday some kids get.

Having relatives (or partner's relatives) living off-Island applies to teachers as well, of course - do you think we're going to attract people to teach shortage subjects by telling them they can't go home at Christmas?

This clearly a one-off caused by Christmas falling on a Sunday and presumably won't be needed in other circumstances.

You think everyone who might want to go and visit friends and family for Christmas can do so?

Wow.  To quote Oscar Wilde “we obviously move in different circles”

Good for you though if nobody you know can’t afford the cost of getting them and their kids on and off island at peak time or afford the time off work.

No wonder we have such issues if the fortunate can’t even contemplate the issues that many others have to consider.  So many on here not seeing an issue shows how big the divide has become.

I have sent to Government children welfare services, all the people on Manx Radio facebook complaining about not being able to take an extra  day off at Xmas to look after their children.  If they can't organise a day off with months of notice, what happens when one of the children fall ill.

The teachers are thanking Julie by taking more industrial action now they’ve returned from 6 weeks holiday!!

Maybe the feeling is that this will be more effective than taking industrial action during holidays, unless you know different?  You seem to have a lot of thoughts on industrial action Banker, are you the type of person who would support the removal from workers of the right to take industrial action?  Just asking for a friend.

Did they?

Schools will be open today as normal.

Some parents have asked whether they should send their children to school.

Yeah more than likely the parents.  Ironic that many are wailing about the extra christmas day off, but when it rains a bit and is slightly blowy, they are all questioning if the schools are closed.

Parents question whether or not the schools will close so they can find someone to mind their children so they can go to work.

What's ironic about that?

Teachers don't make the decision to close or not close. The office-bods in the DESC do.

Sorry I meant to quote Newsdesk (who Wavey quoted) there but he's on the previous page and I'm in a rush.
