When it comes to the UK nuclear deterrent, arguably the blackmail is coming from the US. 1

Well, it’d just be a wonderful test for article 5. Either NATO backs you up, or, it falls apart. Plus, if the nukes ever came, it wouldn’t take much at all to render Britain uninhabitable. It’s why they scrapped evacuation plans and never bothered with public bunkers in a skint post WW2 Britain. Even Civil Defence was scrapped, as there wasn’t expected to be much they could do. The big secret is that no country is actually willing to use nukes. Rendering them utterly pointless as a deterrent, and pointless as anything else too. It's utterly ridiculous that we still have them as some sort of apocalyptic game of chicken. Clown planet. 1

Or, they are a very good deterrent to nuclear war. They don't deter conventional war, but perhaps the fact they exist keeps warfare conventional. They exist, the technology is there and will never be forgotten, but possibly they are the one thing that keeps nations playing, roughly, within the rules? BTW, I am not a supporter of the nuclear option, one of the worst 'inventions' of the 20th C. but they ain't going away.

Most proponents would claim the opposite - that they're a deterrent to ground war. Because once there's a nuclear war, it's over for everyone either way. Whilst I agree that it is clown planet, the highlighted sentence seems to conflict with itself Its worth noting that when the US had them an no one else did, they used them. Now everyone seems to have them. They haven't been used since. Whilst I would rather see no one have them, they are certainly a deterrent and I can't why why an intelitent person can't see that.
