Well why not? If you don't ask you don't get. People are not indentured servants; their labour comes at a cost; and that cost is rising. 4

Short term or one off payments to help people out maybe, but not a fixed percentage pay rise for everyone that then carries forward for years to come. Perhaps Government officials, MHKs and anyone over £80k pa based on last tax return should have a pay freeze this financial year. You know, to help everyone out, leading from the front, doing what's best for the island etc, (get the defibrillator ready) 4

You still have to be careful though, as narrowing the pay difference between unskilled low paid tasks and people with decades of experience, huge responsibilities and loads of qualifications causes it’s own issues. I still think one of payments or help with energy bills for people is a better option.

Fine by me. Absolute nonsense. Dave earns 45k and is a single man who lives in a house he inherited. His house is 300 yards from his workplace in the middle of Douglas so he doesn’t own a car. Trevor is a married man with five kids, all under 10. Mrs Dave is currently a stay at home mum and they pay £1400 a month rent. The kids school is a 35 minute walk from home, and Trevor works in Ramsey while their house is in Douglas. You think Dave deserves a pay rise to help him cope and Trevor doesn’t? People need to look at the bigger picture.

It’s way more involved than just saying someone who earns a certain amount deserves help while someone else who earns y amount doesn’t

hissingsid
Dave did not actively encourage Trevor and his Mrs to have five children when they are paying a ridiculous amount of rent that requires two wages to furnish. Trevor is already getting child allowance, free education, free healthcare etc for his five children so is certainly getting a good deal as a tax payer.

If the Government weren't so shit at retaining our young then the taxpayer would be getting a great deal from Trevor's 5 kids (in a few years time).
