Mid life political crisis?

I can see the whole green plan faltering somewhat with the situation at the moment the UK are considering permitting fracking which would have been a big no no a year ago.   Whilst there may be a ban on installation of gas and oil boilers in new builds houses already standing will be having them installed when the old ones need renewed.    There is much virtue signalling regarding the green way forward but not a lot of progress goalposts can be moved very easily.

I'd always thought 'cold war' was metaphorical, rather than directly related to heating and power.

Those who have spare cash out in heat pumps and solar and more insulation and save money long term.

Those on benefits or under a certain threshold are subsidised to do the same.

Those in the middle get stung by still needing electricity fed to them in a market where prices are rising due to falling demand.  

Then in 15 years rinse and repeat because the tech people are installing now will be horrifically out of date .

 

Absolutely, but what we are facing now is a policy over many years of leaving it up to individuals rather than IOMG taking the lead by establishing more sustainable sources of power into the grid.

Some have said buy the sustainable energy from our neighbours through an interconnector, that seems like the best "quick fix".

IOMG's policy hitherto has either been unimaginative and without initiative, or lazy.

Won't they be prohibited by law in refitting them by then ?

We might as well just copy and paste that to every thread and close the forums down 😂.

Its a shame, because as a small island we have the ability to be far more imaginative than most places would dream of, but on the rare occasions someone does try all the NiMBYS are up in arms and we end up moving backwards again.

Have we ever been 'nimble' Gladys? We're a small independently governed Island, we could have been a Guiney Pig for so many things, say, crime, a link with a University research program on how would a Primary School lesson on moral responsibility have kept kids from minor criminal acts in their later teens and adulthood???

So many other areas that we could have taken the advice of experts in the field!!!

Is it down to our MHKs not wishing to be out shone by others?

Agreed. There have been opportunities that sadly may have been missed mainly due to the concept of maintaining 'independence' from the UK and rejecting any notion of closer ties to benefit people here. It would, and to some extent still is, be politically unacceptable to get 'too close' despite our financial arrangements.

Reciprocal agreement doesn't get mentioned a lot nowadays.

We were nimble at one point, that is for sure.  It was one of our USPs.  But what that really meant was finding a way around other's rules.

What I mean about being nimble, is to stop the unnecessary bureaucracy, concentrate  on our own internal affairs and deal with IOM  issues for the betterment of the island.

We cannot buck the international thrust  but we can look at what we do for ourselves. 

Perhaps instead of looking outward all the time, we need to look inward?

Sorry @Gladysbut those days are fast disappearing. What happens now in one jurisdictions affects so many others, and. so quickly. Just look at the current financial crisis in the UK - will have a massive impact here. We are now so interconnected I don't see how maintaining the  illusion of independence can be maintained. I really wish it were not so.

No politician can say all that though.

Agreed, but that shouldn't stop us trying.  

We will never be immune to international economic influences, but we can't change them so why not look parochially rather than focus on being a 'player', because we aren't really, other than being a bit of pariah.
