The seawall is actually fine. It is the build up of sand along the entire length, and lack of groins / chines that has focused the power of the easterly to that area. If they spent a few grand shifting the sand back down the beach, and allow the currently sunken seawall to do its job, the problem would go away virtually overnight!

ETA, I was on Douglas Head the other day and the rise in the level of sand causing the problem is clearly visible. Take a look next time you are up there. You can see how it focuses the waves.

Removing the sand along the promenade ain't going to stop this from happening again:

I went into my fishmongers today to buy some Manx caught herring ,  they had none !  and the staff said they were very small almost like pilchards , he commented  they would probably finish up going for bait  if we are paying £150k  to fishermen to catch an endangered  species   at spawning time , then someone should question   the departments environmental policies ,

its just a few years ago this same  department gave permission to a fisherman to catch a few Mullet   for bait , and surprise surprise they caught almost everyone , now we rarely see this beautiful surface feeding fish in our harbours ,  if MHK Heywood is not aware of this then there are a few conservationists  who will put her right on a few things , lets see the departments fisheries management and business  plan  and where herring actually sit , it will be interesting to see if Deverau's have  purchased any  to make mini kippers ?

The biggest concern Douglas Ratepayers should have is whether the garden walls are up to getting another pounding from the next big easterly hitting the prom.

What happened to the supposed work that DOI were going to do on strengthening/adding a seawall to mitigate serious overtopping down by the gardens??

Seems a bit premature to me if the seawall issue hasn't been done yet.

Does anyone fact check anything before they post here?  The sea wall will be in before this work is done.

By the Sunken gardens?  It’s nothing to do with buildup or groynes and the gardens have been hammered by storms most year for as long as any of us have been alive.

Which is why planning for the wall has been granted, funds allocated and a contractor awarded the job of building it in the New Year.

Bit of a fallacy this - Douglas are not making a one off purchase and obviously have no control over interest rates.  They will have a capital programme where they are spending millions on average across all their schemes (housing/parks/etc). It's not feasible to build everything once every 10 years when interest rates are lower and then sit on your hands for the other 9 years.

Well considering that the last we heard the insurers were supposedly paying for what was said to be storm damage

https://gef.im/news/politics/prom-walls-finally-look-set-to-be-repaired-25788/

But now it seems that the ratepayers are borrowing over a million quid instead to get additional work done timing most certainly seems to be an issue. I wonder if the insurers failed to pay out any claim? But the work has needed doing for at least a year and is now being done at a time when the borrowing costs will be very high.

Go up Douglas Head and look. Anybody can see how the sand has built up by the War Memorial and focuses the power of the sea at that one specific area. It is obvious! Without doubt!

This is almost the most miserable thing I’ve seen ever

https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/douglas-council-to-charge-for-memorial-plaque-renewal-every-ten-years/

Why not just charge more in the first place rather than enforce renewal after 10 years? Surely the whole purpose of a memorial is that you want it up for more than 10 years?

Braddan commissioner’s want to change to twice weekly refuse like DBC but have discovered that contract runs to 3/2025 for weekly collection!

Why would anyone want a collection twice a week? Douglas do it fortnightly, ie once every two weeks.
