How the hell does burning a few thousand quid contribute to the quality of life?

Lots of people turn upto watch them, all over Douglas. Last time there were several thousand watching so obviously many enjoy them & no doubt some spend money in bars/restaurants etc before/afterwards

The same could be said for public executions.

I agree with your comments, but unfortunately times have changed and are constantly changing. We are being force fed climate change from national and local politicians, from Tynpotwald to Parish Pump. I’m sorry but fireworks create these things

* Smoke Pollution

* Noise Pollution

* Litter - like sky lanterns and helium balloons which create havoc for the farming and environmentalists.

* The damaging effects to local wildlife and to pets.

* Possible injuries due to firework misuse by irresponsible people attending and bringing inappropriate fireworks to let off, not excluding sparkler misuse.

In addition we have a bonfire (s) which create smoke pollution when IOMG and its tentacles discourage homeowners from installing log burners or open fires etc.

Also our emergency services are already at full stretch, fire and ambulances, not to mention A&E at Nobles which has been heavily criticised.

Now is the time to end this tradition, then DBC/IOMG can dick wave their environmental credentials, and save ratepayers.money in the process.

Got to be some fun allowed, perhaps we should ban Xmas tree sales because of damage to environment from felling millions of trees & transporting them across Europe!

So the fireworks are going to cost the ratepayers a bundle with just a contribution from a sponsor.    That took some dragging out….whilst a presenter on the Breakfast Show on MR are saying they are being underwritten gives the impression that there will be no cost to the ratepayers, I am not blaming her she is no doubt making the assumption that other people are making when an event is sponsored the sponsor usually pays  for the lot the term unwritten was unusual in it’s useage, now we know why.

The idea that "when an event is sponsored the sponsor usually pays  for the lot" is and always has been complete nonsense.  When you see a long list of sponsors for something, do you think they are all paying for the lot?  When firms sponsor something like the Olympics, do you think they are paying for everything?  In the rare cases when a sponsor does pay for everything (or all of a part of something) it's usually made pretty clear that they have.  Otherwise it just means they have made a substantial contribution.

(Manx Radio was presumably just using the wrong word.  Something that is not unknown).

So it still begs the question…how much are Douglas Ratepayers paying as their contribution  for the firework display ?

In times of old, community fireworks events were popular and local authorities were able to put money aside. Today there are more demands on local authorities, and more focus on what funds are being spent. I think the days of fireworks are in the past, fine is there is money given by a sponsor, but either way, the ratepayers will still pay (certainly for the clean up afterwards), and I’m sure the taxpayers will have to pay a contribution.

time for the city fathers to come clean and tell us exactly what the contribution is  ? and weather the cost of the fireworks are the equivalent  of having a weekly  refuse bun collection ?

Somewhere between £10,000-£20,000 so it depends how much the sponsor is coughing up.

£20,000 don't really get you much in the commercial firework display, not even the dud selection box that a lot of family's used to end up with on Guy Fawkes night. All nice and sparkly, no excitement. Think we would be looking at £60-80,000 for nice aerial display that befits a city.  DBC could be 40 to 90% of the cost. Do not expect anybody to come on here waving the receipt. Add  on top £1,000 cost of the men to place/remove equipment and make sure Tarquin do not get hold of one for his back garden display. Whole new meaning of making the the night go with a bang
