You have just given the best argument for an all island authority.

The rest of the island already subsidises Douglas by using or working at the many businesses which pay business rates in Douglas.

If anything there is a stronger case for taking some of the business rates raised in Douglas and giving them to other authorities - where the people that use or work at those businesses live.

Perhaps it is the other way round?

Why? So we can bail out and subsidise Douglas ratepayers who voted these numpties in? Or maybe didn't even vote at all.

No thanks. Time and again DBC have failed in their duty to maintain buldings and services in their remit and go begging cap in hand to the taxpayer to buy out horse trams, tower of refuge, villa gaeity etc. Enough is enough. They made this farce let them deal with the consequences.

I’m not sure you’ve got your facts wholly correct on the buy out thing.

Horse Trams? Douglas didn’t go begging, cap in hand. They closed it down. Government went begging to buy as they considered it a national asset.

Tower of Refuge? Did it ever belong to Douglas Corporation. St Mary’s Isle belonged to the Quanes and was conveyed to William Hillary, as President of Douglas District RNLI, in 1832,  on trust for his life and thereafter to each successor president. At some stage it came into the ownership of the GPT’s.

Gaiety? Gaiety came into government ownership in the late 1960’s from the Palace & Derby Castle Company. It never belonged to the Corpie. It was the same time that the Corpie acquired Derby Castle theatre and dance hall from Palace & Derby Castle Co. To demolish and build ill fated Summerland.

Villa? I’ll give you that it was transferred from the Corpie to Government and government paid for total refurbishment in the 1990’s. But I don’t think there was a Corpie begging bowl.

Of course we could look at times when government “stole” Corpie assets. Electricity springs to mind. The successful Corpie Elelctricity Department, with much lower charges, was expropriated and amalgamated with IoMEB to form MEA in 1984.

Refuse collection needs to be merged into an all-island service.

Bugger off!

It works fine in Ramsey. We don’t need to have the mess and  problems that other parts of the Island are experienced foisted upon us.

Leave us alone. (and thanks to Ramsey Commissioners for not going down the Douglas path)

Hang on, aren't all those 'buy outs' things that define the whole of the IOM?  Are they not national treasures?

'They' did not make 'this farce' it was an implementation of an island wide policy, apparently.

You have just given the best argument for an all island authority.

We have one already, it's called the IOM Government. So why not just scrap all the local authorites and transfer the roles to government departments? Imagine the savings.

It is inevitable for it to become an all island wide provision, like so many other services.  The pain goes away when we stop banging our heads against the wall. As for the fear, well, there are bigger things to be scared about. That's what Governments are for - create problems. solve problems, use other people money to avoid the personal risk, get name on a plaque.

Or something like that.

Yes, because IRIS (all island sewage treatment that still isn't finished after 30 years) worked out so well.

You forgot the "blame the last guy and/or blame the public for being awkward" and if that fails "rename the departments and draw a new organsiational chart ~ that'll confuse the buggers" Also known as the "It's not Windscale but Sellafield" gambit.

Did Nick Black ever get a replacement?

"The chair of the Climate Change Transformation Board says she’s 'intrigued' by Douglas Council’s decision to move to fortnightly waste collection".

https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/climate-change-chair-intrigued-by-councils-new-waste-strategy/

This has puzzled me. She has nothing to do with DBC or anything to do with the refuse crisis, yet she is sticking her beak into something that really doesn’t concern her. The decisions that DBC made are for DBC to rectify or they will face the consequences from both ratepayers and the electorate, which will also impact on Douglas MHKs.

Seeing as Daffy wishes to interfere, perhaps she can put right the shenanigans on Onchan Commissioners, seeing as being Garff MHK encompasses parts of Onchan.

As Daffy was given ‘Chair’ of the Climate Change Transformation Board, the power seems to have gone to her head, the same applying to that other arrogant MHK Minister Thomas, not forgetting that expert on all matters financial, medical and shredding Professor Ashford, who all seem to think they are right, and don’t like anybody disagreeing with them.
