Gold Post Box

Passing Time

Quirky was on Mannin Line disputing the fact that the Commissioners had been consulted because…..quote….I am one and would have known….unquote.   The thing is it provided a good talking point on the old moaning line well worth a fiver of anyone’s money.   Thing is though if it was painted by any professional painter it would be nearer £250 quid especially with the double jobby.    Someone on FB said a friend of hers had visited the Island especially to view the post box .    As it could be classed as a tourist attraction perhaps the Tourist lot should fund the painting.

10 years. And it was hardly a cheap publicity stunt, that post box will soon have had about a fiver's worth of paint on it!

It was a cheap publicity stunt though. Did they think they were dong Peter a favour advertising that they were painting a post box for him. He basically did all the work in winning a gold medal.

I seem to remember ructions initially as they weren't going to do a gold box. Then after a lot of jumping up and down a crappy halfhearted job was done. As someone has said, the paint was more bronze than gold

All that glitters is not gold...

The gold post box thing is UK and NI wide but it is especially significant because the Isle of Man, up to relatively recently,  has won next to sweet FA on the World stage, at anything, let alone sport. The current Chairman of the Post Office clearly cannot appreciate the full meaning of that as he seems at times to treat his home as just a convenient small county of England.

I mean no disrespect as such, but there are a couple or more detractors in this thread who are of the couch potato variety.

I’ve no issue with commemorating achievement in sport, science, arts, etc, by Isle of Man residents.

10 years ago it was portrayed as temporary.

Quite happy for something permanent.

Also that the other Manx Olympic medal winners should be commemorated somehow. Another gold, a silver, a bronze.

Plus the Commonwealth Games medal winners, 3 x Gold 3 x Silver, 6 x  Bronze.

Im just suggesting blue plaques would be more suitable than a dirty gold post box.

Surely, adopting the gold post box concept is much more about akin to being  treated as an English county.

The island is British when it suits and Manx when it doesn't.

Quirky is a pain in the arse with far too much time on his hands.
