Smacks a little of double standards…if ONLY the other car owners were capable of intelligent thought - like you…

Not at all, I use the car when there is logically no other option, I like fresh airand good health, and my cabon footprint is therfore massivley reduced. The idea of zero carbon is not achieveable right now but that won't stop me trying to reduce as much as I can.

But the buses are all diesel and do about 7mpg

The “express bus” runs over the mountain every morning and hold up a huge line of cars who end up burning more fuel than of it wasn’t there and if you are ever unfortunate enough to be in Ramsey when it leaves you will see that most of the people who use it drive or get a lift to the bus station.

Where as a landorver discovery does about 19mpg and almost always has just one person in there who bought the car to look outdoorsy whilst still being a fat chuff who moans about people who actually  are outdoorsy.

I’m averaging about 29 in the discovery sport. Most of my mileage is motorway off Island.

We get nearly 60 - 65mpg  day in day out in the family run about diesel.  normally with two of us doing a 40 mile return journey to work.  So easily less than a gallon a day for journeys that even with the £2 capped fare would cost us £8 a day, take at least twice as long, and on wet days involve the addition of a taxi or getting soaked.

Public transport and active travel are non starters for so many people they are better off incentivising people to run more efficient vehicles.

Yeah, motorway off island, so you like the outdoors?

No, I need a vehicle that’s comfortable, doing long distances, sometimes in the mountains and snow, and can carry the two dogs and my electric wheelchair. I don’t want a van. I am considering an all terrain chair, however.

If you haven’t driven or been driven in a modern van then I would honestly suggest you try one.  They are very car like these days (honestly, our is more comfortable than any land/Range Rover I have ever been in,and far more economical.

Mercedes, Ford (transit custom) and VW would all be worth a look.  The acre can versions are superb , but expensive

I want 4WD

i need an automatic

I need to be able to get in like a car. Vans are a struggle.

Height fare penalties on multiple ferries are a no no.

Predicates against a van.

I learned to drive in a mini van and a VW motorhome. I regularly drove Paul’s Doblo when he was working.

As well as the Disco here Ive got a 9 year old low mileage 4x4 diesel Duster in Spain, with hand clutch and fitted with hoist for chair. Worth nothing, but a pleasant drive. And I get 45+. Had an upholsterer re trim interior in leather in Bulgaria during their lockdown. .

Fortunately because I qualify for DLA & mobility I get VAT knocked off. But I’m not looking to replace the Disco or Duster.

In Jan/Feb/March I’m sailing IoM Heysham, Holyhead Dublin, Rosslare Bilbao, Barcelona Civitavecchia, Ancona Igoumenitsa and return via Santander Portsmouth. A van would add £1200-1500 to that trip.

That seems a lot of mpg for a diesel car in Iom?
