The latest report into the 'Meat Plant' doesn't make for positive reading. Yet another Government quango being poorly run with no accountability.

I’d love to know who the 4 new NEDs are.

There must have been a new thread on the Meat Plant every year for at least the last 10 years.

Discussing the same annual losses. Discussing the same annual promises of change of management that are going to turn the whole clusterfuck around.

At least ten years of failed policies and promises. But somebody somewhere still trousers a lot of taxpayer's wonga.

One might wonder who they are and what influence they have on keeping things just hunky-dory?

Interesting piece from Gef written in July 2021 gives quite a lot of background.  It's based on report that Barber produced when she was Chair of the Environment Policy Review Committee:

https://www.tynwald.org.im/business/pp/Reports/2021-PP-0150.pdf

and in the debate Chris Robertshaw said it was the most damning report he had ever seen.  When it went to Tynwald it was only opposed by CoMin and their two trusties, Perkins and Callister.

One of the things the Committee wanted was to get the Auditor General to look at the Plant as soon as appointed, but 16 months later we're still waiting.  So Barber, now poacher turned gamekeeper, must have forced through the appointment of a full audit of all aspects of the plant.

They also said Members of Tynwald should not be on the board.

They shouldn’t be on any government owned companies & then they would be run as businesses instead of political punch balls!!

MUA, Post Office, Meat plant etc should all be corporations

Something concerns me, is that Minister Barber was in charge for over a year, and the report was compiled in September and October of this year. Why hasn’t she done anything with the meat plant, and it’s management failings. I really can’t understand what making Minister Barber it’s Chairperson is going to achieve?

If you read the full report there is a long list of recommendations. Presumably she will set these in motion.

But as a Member of Tynwald she should not be chair. DEFA is the regulatory body.

Pretty damning report. Here are a few quick take aways:-

  • Poor Leadership.
  • Poor MI and financial data
  • No KPI's
  • No idea how to market the product
  • Poor relationships with suppliers and customers
  • Escalating subvention
  • Grossly inefficient
  • Poor staff morale
  • No training and development
  • Over-staffed by around 40%
  • Staff attendance running at around 75%
  • Managers getting their bonuses anyway

Could probably be a proxy for any other IOMG Quango, or semi-commercial operation.
