Couldn't agree more.its around 4000 pounds weight of meat .so several tens of  thousand £s value. But as you get to realise politicians only deal with the,"bigger picture,". It saves then dealing with real issues that affect people on a day to day basis.

So, arguably, 4,000 meals wasted.  How many animals needlessly slaughtered?  Not a vegetarian, but absolutely expect ethical practices in the meat and animal products industries.

There’s been so many stories of why this operation is so useless . Would seem the real problem might just be staff to dispatch and butcher the cuts. Wonder how many there are in management ?.And that I’m sure is the root of the problem. It’s a sign of times to come with the bloat in central government and excessive management . Need to get it sorted. Gone on too long now with seemingly nothing being able to be done to alleviate it.

The way to sort it is close it & save £2/3m Pa and just import the meat, would mean losing local meat production but save massive subsidies for farmers as well. Downside is that many farmers would lose livelihood & we would be reliant on imports.

But would we lose local meat production. So much goes across currently. The whole operation was doomed at the start as per usual they went for a building far too big for our needs . It would seem that Lee Mayers thinks he will still be able to source Manx meat. As for the farmers . Lots don’t really farm there land now as they get a living doing nothing through the countryside maintenance scheme  . I know one who has stopped farming  his land about 8 years ago. Sold of his beef herd and rented some of the land out to a start up farmer to graze sheep on.

Most people have lost count of the number of management changes that promised to sort out the Meat Plant. Wasn't Clare Barber supposed to be taking control a while back?

Live export is near impossible. Has to be accompanied by a qualified stockman, They mustn’t be in the transporter more than 8 hours. That includes the ferry journey. That’s why it stopped out of Ramsey.

Say 1 hour to port plus one hour marshalling and loading then 4 hours on board. Then a trip to the nearest abattoir. I think that’s probably Preston or Carlisle. So another hour or two. Any delays and it’s out of time.

Im pretty sure both Preston and Carlisle receive 24/7.

The farmers get better prices in England.

im not in favour of live export. But perhaps we could explore the abattoir becoming slaughter and chill only with carcasses being sent over and butchered and packed in England. Then stuff for Manx consumption could be sent back?

Presumably that would reduce head count, including management and preparation, and reduce abattoir costs. The increased price to farmers would benefit them. Government could pay to operate the basic abattoir operation.  Fatstock Marketing Association/Manx Meats could be folded.
