Meat Plant Slaughtered

Hardly 'doomed' but it would be nice to know what was wrong, indeed, we deserve to know?

Even if one machine was shredding its bearings and that meat had to be withdrawn, that would not mean production could not continue without that machine!!!

Are we Mushrooms???

Does anyone know the 'actual' reason the meat had to be withdrawn?

It's blamed on a packing machine, bit vague?

Could have been metal shards on the meat, a gearbox oil leak, tho' food machines use food safe lubricants. There was some speculation of sabotage! Any more info?

FFS sabotage?!

Oh dear the Meat Plant woes continue. Good job it's run at arms length. Well apart from the £2 million subvention which no doubt will be increased now to cover the cost of the latest mess.

The action plan implimented 14 months ago seems not to be working too well.

The first article is from 2024 but the SECOND link to the 2022 article was background and context. But guess that was too difficult to comprehend.

Guess I'll just go back to the circus on Prospect Hill shall I? 🤡

Turns out they put the wrong 'use by date' on their products   https://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/wrong-use-by-date-sparks-isle-of-man-meats-product-recall-664197

It'll be chalked up to human error no doubt. Though that begs the question why there is room for error on a critical peice of labelling information in a presumably automated system.

Perhaps they didn't know it is a leap year.

I doubt very much it's automated - or indeed could.   Trying to find out what the rules are for setting "Use By" on meat (or anything else) seems very difficult and may be more to do with what the contract with the retailer states.  And it will be influenced by what the meat is, how it has been treated, what cut it and so on will mean it varies.  And there's much discussion about whether it's still OK, even preferable, to eat it after the specified date.

It turns out that only one batch of beef was actually recalled according to Gef and that very little had gone on sale and only at Tesco on Wednesday morning.   Of course even that may still have been within date at the time.

I suspect the real story here is how poor Government Comms are.  If you look at the press release they put out it could have been designed to maximise panic without providing any concrete information.  As so often recently it seems to be more about civil servants a best protecting their own backs and at worse throwing their weight around just because they can.  Not so much creating a drama out of a crisis as out of a glitch.

Still in date according to the PR. use by 5 Feb!!! Or 7 Feb!!! Why 2 dates? Sell by and Use by? Maybe the two dates were the mistake, maybe too short a date for the retailers to sell within?

Not a convincing explanation. Possibly triggered by social media comment?

Strange!

Latest collateral  damage from our wonderful meat plant. This really has gone on far too long.
Buy local they say .!!
Andreas meats latest post.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news 😔 however, we will have to close our website down with immediate effect.

I will be in contact with the customers, who have ordered for Tuesday deliveries, in due course. (Friday 12th April- are OK at the moment but are subject to change).  We didn't have any pork or beef delivered to us from IOM Meats  this afternoon.

With this in mind, we will have a reduced range of our products for the coming week.
Apologies again for any inconvenience caused. We really do appreciate your patience at this time.

A lorry driver rang the Mannin Line yesterday to see when delivering to the meatplant he saw beef being skipped.  All kinds of rumours of non-deliveries and wastage.  What is going on there?

Massive subsidy too needed to run it. Not sure how much but it always needs an injection to enable it to carry ! on. If there throwing meat away that I presume farmers have been paid for the carcasses then it’s a double whammy . Good old Government. Just looked it up and it’s now under the treasury with the last injection of funds 2 million . Moved from DEFA
