Here's the press release with all the details of the new directors:

  • Damien Corcoran (Chair): A food retail leader with international retail experience and a background in strategic and organisational change
  • Rob Teare: A leading Manx butcher with substantial red meat experience
  • Dr Jonathan Birnie: An agricultural economist and the principal author of a comprehensive report on the abattoir
  • Philip Birnie: An experienced red meat businessman with expertise in abattoir and meat processing operations
  • Andrew McKeown: A Manx farmer and haulier who has industry experience in the abattoir sector, particularly procurement

The two Birnies (who I suspect are father and son) were co-authors of the Birnie Report into the Abattoir, published two years ago which confirmed just what a mess the place was in.  So now they've got the chance to show they can do better.  They seem to have been balanced with local meat trade people which might prevent alienation from the local producers.

Of course appointing NEDs who know something about the business they are responsible for rather than just knowing how to be NEDs  may be seen as dangerously radical in Cannanworld.

A couple of years ago at the Manx Meats stall at the Food Fair, I spoke to one of the staff and asked why there was a limited range of Manx Meat available, thinking of the less mainstream cuts.  The reply was we are never asked for that from butchers, to which I thought, 'as a marketing organisation, you create the market, that is your job'.

The Birnie Report agrees with you.  For example:

The red offal processing facilities were inspected and the procedures which were in place were deemed to be of a high standard. The quality of processing was excellent, and the preparation and presentation of the product was good. The operative was trimming skirts, liver, kidneys, hearts and tongues to a very good standard.

We were told that the product was going to a dog food factory, and it is possible that the product was being overprepared. The product was processed to a standard which would meet human consumption standards. If this could be achieved, the product could potentially be sold at a higher price point.

It may be worth exploring the potential for sale of offal for human consumption. This may not be possible and is certainly not as large a priority as many of the other factors identified during this audit, but it is something which could potentially add revenue.

Thanks Roger, but it isn't even the more 'exotic' products.  In Tesco it is only meat joints, some pork chops and belly slices, and mince, with the latter being the biggest proportion, being stocked. 

I guess this is because the meatplant can't prepare the more intricate cuts, like chops, steaks, cheaper cuts of meat, before we even get on to offal. 

Tesco used to have ox cheek on it's butcher's counter, great for braising and stewing, tons of flavour and very tender.  None now.  So, either our cows don't have cheeks, or it mainly goes for dog food unless a butcher specifically asks for it. Such a waste in many ways.

Quick change management. Corcoran only joined Gander back in February of this year.

It's worth reading the Report I linked to earlier, which is very practical and contained a lot of suggestions for saving money or increasing business and profit.   It's full of figures, operational and financial and details of what jobs are currently done.  It's about as far you can get from the usual IOMG reports and 'strategies' full of business jargon and bland statements of the obvious and abstract nouns and white space and pretty stock photos.

It probably cost about a tenth as much as well.

Think it’s just statutory boards which I’m assuming meat plant isn’t and Barber has power to appoint. The remuneration is all different as well, with ones like MUA,OFT and Post office getting the lowest, GSC getting a lot more then steam packet and FSA getting by far the most. Unsure what meat plant get.
