Just what the island needs, wealthy tax dodgers pushing up the property prices on the island…

Bringing money with them to spend in the economy.  Its all good.

The more the merrier, especially if they are of working age and bring businesses with them.

Dont be silly.

Hooefujlly we will see quite a few new residents.  A family member who is an estate agent reports quite a few enquiries from wealthy brits recently citing a Labour goverment as their reason for looking to relocate.

Tell your family member to pass on to their clients that we said "Fuck off."

Most of us would welcome new residents.

Anyone who doesn’t, needs to take a long, hard look at themselves.

I would certainly welcome new residents. But not the kind that immediately do the runner at the sight of a mostly right wing Labour party. Because they're likely dipshits and dickheads.

People of wealth don't tend to spend their money in local economies, either.

And yet 2 separate young families who live in my estate are leaving the island, as the cost of living here or according to them getting off the island to see their families is astronomical there being no financial benefit of living here.
working families leaving.

Being replaced by plenty of others.  No big deal.

Also on page 21 of the manifesto -

Labour will address unfairness in the tax system. We will abolish non-dom status once and for all, replacing it with a modern scheme for people genuinely in the country for a short period. We will end the use of offshore trusts to avoid inheritance tax so that everyone who makes their home here in the UK pays their taxes here. Private equity is the only industry where performancerelated pay is treated as capital gains. Labour will close this loophole.

Not necessarily in conflict with what you are hearing, but I hope that folk like that are very well advised - which will be difficult if the Taxes Acts are going to be changed significantly.

We may not be f--ked. But it may compel our lot to start exhibiting some fiscal responsibility in governance which would be no bad thing.

Nothing to do with fiscal responsibility, they’re looking at tax dodgers, umbrella companies, probably payroll etc . Probably get even more edicts from FSA asking for yet more due diligence etc. I understand the latest edict is that anyone in charge of sporting bodies is a PEP eg head of FA IOM etc

We've always had this obsession about trying to attract the wealthy here in the belief that they would be some sort of philanthropic saviours.

From 2017 there's a thread on this forum full of comments from one or two particularly enthusiastic posters who were full of admiration for and vociferously touting the benefaction that was going to be brought to the Island's prospects with the arrival of Mone/Barrowman.

7 years on with the Island's name and reputation having been further sullied (again) through connection to their self-benefitting "activities", the Island hasn't quite had the benefactors they were supposed to be (again).

The fact that wealthy people would "flee" here from their own country at the prospect of a change of Government and perhaps having to pay some tax tells one all one needs to know about their loyalties to any jurisdiction.

Are you aware how much they have contributed to the local economy and charities?

Its a very significant amount.

Having HNW families and individuals living here is beneficial, they use public services to the same level as someone living in Anagh Coar, probably less in reality. They contribute more to the economy through taxation, retail purchases, donations etc. They also lift the ambience and vibrancy by just making it possible for events and certain establishments to exist. And when they try to invest in the island, we can always make it difficult for them if we like, because we can!

"Investment opportunities".

No bother.  They pay a significant amount of additional revenue to government if they buy one over a local whois going to live in it, and the island is desperate for rental properties at the moment.
