Pay peanuts and you get monkeys.

someone with similar responsibilities can earn a fair amount more in the private sector. But. Being paid a high but fair wage is not what most on this forum care about and object to - as they get paid far less

and here comes the - yeah but the gov squander money, the departments should run themselves, nothing will ever change etc etc.

Your right but in the private sector they would be required to put a shift in and earn the salary. Sadly to many senior people in CS. don't do so so guess what , neither do the underlings . Of course theres a few exceptions Oh ,and responsibility and balancing the books is massively effected by this mindset.

Still going to get a failed private sector monkey, you know the one that is so eye watering incompetent that word has got round. This will be his saviour, he thinks he knows someone once from a glad hand conference he went to. You know the one where he thought he was destined for bigger things, only talked to the people from that little rinky dink island to be polite. Now if only he could remember his name Alister no Aloisious no Alf thats the prats name. Bingo

We keep recruiting useless monkeys 🙈

Airport recent example

Whatever the salary, it’s probably the last job theyll ever have so you’d be mad to take it unless you can afford never to work again. Think about the ways it can go wrong at the end…

- Minister doesn’t like you or puts a condition on appointment that you’re emptied (Crookall/Black)

- Overly robust or plain bad management of an employee which you can’t prove wasn’t linked to whistleblowing

in the meantime while you’re in post, you’re a political football for the breadth of operational stuff usually covered by a conglomerate and have a public who seem to expect heads on a stick whenever anything goes wrong, plus a media goldfish bowl. Oh and A Minister.

Taking account of all of the above you’d need to be a last job, cynical psychopath to want it

According to the IOM Newspapers, the Civil Service is expanded by another 5. The Police are setting up a new task force to tackle financial crime. The Pro-Activd International Money Laundering Investigation Team (PIMLIT), are recruiting 5 to work alongside existing members of the economic crimes unit. The PIMLIT unit will have 21 members including legal support and administrative staff. I didn’t know we had so much financial crime on the island, perhaps we need a bigger prison?

And none of them noticed the PPE medpro scandal?

A friend's son had a recent issue with a cryptocoin related theft, the police lacked the skills to even investigate and stated it was too difficult to resolve. I wasn't aware that we could just ignore crimes that are difficult!

Probably a necessity to keep the various regulatory bodies on side , MoneyVal etc

Will that just be freight that is checked or will passengers be subject to customs checks ?

There’s not much freight from Dublin. It’s only the Mannanan. It’s somewhere for the customs officers to work under shelter and to allow inspection under cover, out of public gaze on the few vehicles and passengers who are selected for inspection.

It’s no different from the similar security shelter in the port security area marshalling yard where random vehicles are security inspected.

We've forgotten that this was the norm for Dublin arrivals prior to the single market. Although the laugh was that no one in their right mind would have been bringing in duty paid goods from Dublin in my lifetime, and the Steam Packet Dublin duty free only ran for a few years and wasn’t well stocked.

there must be a few senior officers   getting ready to retire ,  cant beat picking up your police pension and starting  a new job with a civil service salary ,  and I would assume most have no banking Audit  or financial  experience ,

You don't need any experience if you've already got one foot on the gravy train!
