Here's the actual press release with a bit more detail.  Apparently they've decided to demolish the "condemned toilet block" without deciding what they want to put in its place or what the future use of the site will be.  But don't worry, there will be 'consultations'.

Does anyone know how bad the toilet block actually was by the way?

The toilet block is not all that old - i would say maybe 30 years (I remember it being built) , which for a brick building with a slate roof is nothing.

It was used as a campsite for decades before the toilet block was even there.

For the last few years they've paid for 24hr security (£50k) to make sure no one is camping there without paying for a £15 permit. Now they're deciding it costs too much to run!

Before that you could camp there freely without the need for security - which presumably cost pretty much fuck all to run.

You don't have to be Einstein to realise that's it's not the camping that's the problem, it's the unnecessary, unwanted and costly over-regulation of what is common land.

There's barely a single town or village on the island without a set of public toilets, is it really that expensive to build (or more to the point repair) and service another one on the Claddagh? Who cleans the ones in Ballaugh, Jurby and Sulby? Would be less than a 2 minute drive for them to also do the Claddagh ones.

The Ayres, oh wait!

Just think, if the Claddaghs was left to "re-wild", that would be another area that DEFA wouldn't have to bother or give a shit about, just like most of their other responsibilities including footpaths and plantations.

This time last year I was talking to a gentleman I know, now retired from his industry which included dealing with IoMG on a regular basis. His appraisal of IoMG was that nobody in it wants to do any work anymore.

No proactivity, no initiative, no motivation, just a desire to avoid as much responsibility as possible, sit on fat arses, collecting fat salaries and then fuck off with a big poppy of a pension for doing all that fuck-all with the expectation that the taxpayer will endlessly fund the lot.

DEFA are now taking the narrow lead in proving him right.

why cant they use mobile toilets similar to the ones used at the agricultural shows , they can  be connected to the existing water  and sewage system , and could be used  until  la replacement is constructed , or have we given up on providing facilities for locals and tourists?

I could rebuild the toilet block - no problem.  Cost about £3.7m would be finished around August 2026.

You should probably bring in consultants to assess the feasability of that. I will be happy to consult and advise, for an initial estimated cost of £750k (subject to possible revision and without liability). Annual pre-completion reviews by agreement.

Sounds like hard work, and not enough of a return for Government. There are probably politicos and civil servants who feel why should we do anything, unless there is positive publicity in it for them. I think it’s a cheaper option to do nothing. Instead of camping there, especially during TT, campers and motor homes will have to use official campsites.

Check on how long its taken to re-fit Ballaugh toilet block. Two or three months !

So many people wanting the government to spend less, but complaining when they do.

The Claddaghs was never exactly a successful family campsite. It was a ramshackle piece of boggy scrubland used almost exclusively by pimply youths in £5 tents to set fires and drink cider in between rowing with other pimply youths. It was costing far more money than it was generating, at the same time contributing no meaningful amenity.

Doesn't make sense to spend money on it when there are a number of other campsites around that are better run and supervised and don't generate constant calls from local residents to the police.  Should just close it, stick an estate on it.

You seem to be well informed on this topic. Have you considered publishing a book on the subject? Perhaps titled - A Users Guide to Public Conveniences on the Isle of Man - Essential Reading for Tourists.

Of course you would have to include those open-air toilets in Laxey - world-class, they are.
