It'll end up like a Benny Hill chase. The CCTV operative will spend too much time watching a load of kids lighting fires and fighting being told to behave then rinse and repeat, and the police would be back and forth to Sulby all night. It's why they added permits and employed private permit checkers in the hope that it'd restrain things. It didn't. Too expensive, too much trouble.

No it wouldn't. What would happen is the police would appeal for witnesses to an incident that happened months ago and produce footage akin to a home movie of bigfoot traipsing through the woods...

I thought it was Clare Barber that said that she was the one on MR giving it loads about no one booking for this season then it was said that there were no booking facilities.    I thought DEFA were the ones in control of the site, which would explain a lot, I stand to be corrected on this.

You're right.

It wasn’t security and it was never security. They were nice enough guys but their job was to come around, check the permits, and issue permits to those who did not have them. They never challenged the vandalism in the toilets (that was left to others) and they never challenged bad behaviour. After checking permits they sat in their van until their shift was over. The night I was describing the young guy on duty spent in his van with his nose in a book with his head down. They were permit checkers, not security, no matter what their job title was.

And a £40k annual charge to the taxpayer for the "privilege" of these services.

The anti- greenlaning lobby , an activity steeped in history on the island.

Is there really an anti- greenlaning lobby ? Or is just that people understandably get annoyed at the mess that they make?

It looks like a lot of fun. But wouldn't it make more sense for this kind of thing to happen on private land? Then there would be no issue for anyone to get annoyed about.

Also how come they don't have to have visible number plates?

There was a chap up north who was vehemently against greenlaning for a while.

They do. Your bike needs to be road legal for green lanes: taxed, insured and displaying the appropriate numberplate. You don’t need headlights etc if it’s only for daytime use.

If you didn't have lights the bike is not road legal, regardless of the time of day.

Are you sure? I often see them on main roads with no visible number plates.

They’re sometimes very small, or angled upwards. I’ve even seen some in the form of stickers.

Legally speaking, they should all be displaying a 9”x7” plate. But they’re just one more thing to get damaged.

Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations as amended in 2014 disagree:

Quote

Nothing in these Regulations requires any lamp or reflector to be fitted between sunrise and sunset to —
(a) a vehicle not fitted with any front or rear position lamp;

Not so. You can have a bike tested without lights, the pass documentation will then be issued stating "daylight hours use only".

The test criteria is that if lights are fitted then they must work.
