It being on common land is the issue. Elsewhere, it could probably be sold/rented to a private company with planning consent for development into a "proper" camping site, with proper drainage, facilities and wardens. Being common land actually holds it back.

Does it being common land stop a charge being made. Like an Aire. Pay and display kind of thing.

Not really.  Traditionally common land is only available for Commoners - usually those living in a particular area with specific rights over the land and often some form of self-government to control how it's used.  That's sort of what seems to have happened in this case with the locals meeting and demanding action.  The legal power still rests with the Government though and they can impose what restrictions, charges etc they want as they have in the past.

There are already campsites of the sort you are talking about in the area, but the whole point about the Claddagh was that it mainly attracted locals (outside of race periods) and was more informal and cheaper, which meant those with less money could use it as and when they felt like it.

Good info. But that's exactly the problem with it. Because of its common land status, it remains undeveloped and unsupervised, apart from law enforcement. "Informal and Cheaper" outside of TT means white lightning cider and piles of burning pallets.

Only a partial one it is a fair way to go until it is open.    Easter being a popular time down there and plenty of time to sort it out if they moved their a…s and only a vague promise of looking into the possibility etc…….of it being open after the TT period.    If it is suitable for TTfans it should be ok for Islanders after the TT period.  I do not think Clare Barber moves quickly or that she has the appetite for anything that needs a bit of planning and foresight.    DEFA has never been a department for innovation and under her it has become stagnant.    How is the meat plant doing these days it has gone very quiet on that front and what is happening regarding the money owed to farmers for wool by a firm allegedly DEFA had some dealings with. She is another Chris Thomas all flannel and very little action.

she must have an appetite for something , hardly  a stick insect ! problem with that department is they have no practical people anymore , farmers require support  and good  sound agricultural advice  regarding new markets and consolidating the ones they already have ,  sadly this is another all things to all people department   trying to satisfy the eco and green lobby  and at the same time responsible for agricultural production and fishing  as well as shelling out money to a lot of  hobby businesses  who come and go at an alarming rate ,  and there is no one left who understands the forestry business  but we never find out how much it costs the taxpayer ,

TBF one of IOMG's USPs was to be nimble, but it seems now to be more about limping on after a stumble.

We've created so much red tape all of which is connected to a ten ton weight that is dragging us down!

£100 should perform as an effective deterrent for the average casual camper then. Precisely what facilities does the £100 entitle one to, I thought the toilet/shower block was unfit for purpose which was the whole point behind the previous proposed closure?

Or perhaps now DEFA is just trying to recoup the £40k+ losses in "management fees" that they made the other year?

Time will tell. Has there ever been showers?

Amalgamate the local authorities and hand it over to the Northern one to run. Pay for showers / toilets off rates similar to most parks and then introduce byelaws for nuisances and empower some local wardens to periodically visit / monitor and fine any antisocial behaviour.

It's clear DEFA aren't set up for managing this sort of thing and it's ruining an amenity liked by many
