The Peggy

MNH have been out with the begging bowl, asking for over £6million to build a shed to house the Peggy. However, does anyone in this current financial climate seriously believe it will cost £6million? Liverpool Ferry Terminal will probably cost upwards of £100million. I’m sure those who leave bequests to MNH will not like their legacy squandered by poor planning and increasing raw materials, coupled with egos of management who want all singing all dancing.

Of course, the new stock answer being trotted out is IOMG want 500,000 plus visitors a year. Well it makes a change from not fit for purpose.

Meanwhile, the bus drivers are apologising to customers over the tannoy for the appalling filthy state of the buses citing not enough money to get them cleaned.

Sadly it’s the little things and levels of service which will be cut back. So you could say that those tourists travelling by bus to visit the ‘Peggy’ will be sat on a dirty stinking and messy bus, to save a few quid so government has some spare change to build its museum to the Manx Navy.

MNH said they'll raise £3m themselves but need the £6m available by the end of the year to ensure the project goes ahead. Presumably that means £3m is a loan and £3m a gift from tax payers.

Or maybe they ought to cut the budget to £3m and get a bank loan they can then raise the money themselves.

After all, the odds of the project coming in on time and on budget are slim to non-existant and you jsut know they'll be back with the begging bowl anyway when it tops £6m.

As they say the first 'No' is the easiest. but I suspect this'll be another song and dance until the last minute with Allinson pulling a fast one at the last minute "in the National interest".

it sounds like they have Jessop from Braddan commissioners advising them about fund raising  if ever there was a time for Government to pull its horns in and review spending , its now ,! no one in their right mind embarks on projects when the cost of borrowing money is so high and construction costs ,have gone crazy ,

Did this get posted?

On social media at the weekend there were various comments about certain run down areas across the MNH estate, with parts of the displays on the House of Mannannan / Castle Rushen / etc. being broken for several years.

These obviously cost a lot to run but it does beg the question of how can the MNH estate be expanded when there is insufficient funds to maintain the current areas? I'm sure Moorhouse will fire off twenty questions but it doesn't address the core principle. The Peggy building will probably cost £300k to run per year once open. Outside the Manx Museum, Castle Rushen, House of Manannan and the Laxey Wheel nowhere will get anywhere close in terms of visitor numbers to justify that level of investment and continuing spend. How many visitors does the Old House of Keys get?

It is a very impressive looking proposed building but the numbers cannot stack up.

MNH is a strange hybrid body. Part statutory board or agency funded by government by annual budget funding. Part private charity like the National Trust with private funds from fundraising, one off gifts and legacies.

No loan. The £3million will come from its separate, private, funds or fundraising events/legacies/cash in bank.

It's a nice old curiosity, but spending that much money on it would be a disaster at the moment. Wrap it up appropriately and park it in the large object store, or send it away to a maritime museum. When a conference centre, shopping mall or entertainment hub gets built in better times in the future, you'll have a great centrepiece. Until then, spend the money elsewhere.

I appreciate that some of the funding will be from fundraising and legacies etc, but it’s really insensitive at a time when other frontline services are likely to be hit. These frontline services affect everyone and also the 500,000 visitors that we are supposed to get.

Bus Vannin can’t employ a cleaner to sweep a bus, so it’s likely that passengers will have to sit with rubbish, remains of dinner kebab or possible vomit from a drunk passenger.

So Castletown gets a gleaming new build modern not in keeping building, for an ancient boat, whilst it’s local schoolchildren at Castle Rushen High School have to study in decrepit classrooms, as their won’t be adequate funding towards rebuilding.

As for MNH borrowing £3million, it will need to borrow considerably more, as building costs will continue to rise.

Quite right.

Where is the Peggy now? Jurby?  If it’s of such national historical importance, is there anyway it could not be open to paying groups?

This project should be shelved in view of costs & minimal benefits in my opinion.

In terms of the buses it is apparently only southern based buses as they have cleaners in other depots. I was on one the other day & it wasn’t too bad just wrappers etc on floor left by lazy passengers just chucking them there.
