Don't know about that but they are a cliquey bunch that's for sure

Just like any group really. But all are welcome. I entered several classes over a few years, and won a few too. But then I realised it was more enjoyable playing in pub bands to appreciative crowds, than playing difficult classical repertoire to 10 disapproving old ladies.

The Guild is bad for retail business! All those Grannies going to watch 'their Little Darlings' instead of lunching with their usual friends, who don't go out either. So that's a min of 4 not retailing for a week!!!

Ban it!

I've no problem with Trannies, I don't see them as good, wholesome family entertainment though I'm afraid.

I don't think the Guild is the place for them to perform, but there again, I never go to the Guild?

I think that’s quite offensive, like chinky, spic, polak, etc.

I think you’re confusing people dressing in clothing normally worn by the opposite gender,  not because they’re Transgender, but because they like the clothes, and entertainers dressing in OTT exaggerated costumes to entertain.

I think it's just you that has the wrong end of the stick. Max is clearly referring to transvestites in his reference to trannies as they were known for years before transitioning even became a thing. He's right too. They always struck me as entertaining themselves rather than the audience.

While it would be easy to suspect that a Drag Artiste is harbouring gender identity crisis, otherwise, if you want to sing, why not just sing in your usual clothes???

However, this would ignore the large number of Men who are only too willing to don bras, TuTus and fishnets for a charity run, carnival or stag night?

It's just Fun? Isn't it?

He refers to TV  performing. The class is drag. The two are different and I carefully drew the distinction between TV, TG and drag.

TV’s don’t transition. They are of one gender dressing in the clothing normally thought appropriate for the other ( at least in a binary gender system ).

It could indeed…

Never given it any thought.

Yours are witty, but not enough innuendo.

I too looked at the syllabus.

Elvis is fine, that’s a drag king thing.

Drag, dressing as the opposite gender in an exaggerated manner, for comedic, theatrical, dramatic effect has a long history in English performing art.

Panto has its principal boys and dames and ugly sisters. Pub drag or from the music halls had some real stars. Even variety on TV with Danny La Rue, and later Lilly Savage.

The Disappointer Sisters  at the Casino or Falcon Cliff for several seasons.

I don’t think it’s sexist in the way blackface is racist.

Scoring it if costume is optional  seems odd. The essence of drag is the costume, the makeup, the mannerisms, the patter, the comedy, the challenge to societal norms ( that’s the subversion ) and the singing - not lipsynching.

As for the family audience suitability I’m assuming that innuendo will be allowed. “10 miles to London, and still no dick” type of thing?

Ive not seen much local drag recently. I went to one or two shows and found the performance poor and all the singing was mimed.

Recently saw Cabaret in London, part of the fun was working out which of the KitKat Club “girls” were boys. Same in La Cage aux Folles, which I’m seeing as “La Jaula de las Locas” in a couple of weeks.

a piece by Kelly Kleiman

"In fact, though the consensus that blackface performance is intolerably racist is of relatively recent vintage, before that, analyses of blackface minstrelsy ......concentrated on the meaning of the performance to the performer and the audience, ignoring or discounting it's meaning to, and impact on the people being portrayed.........I argue that....(drag) represent institutionalized male hostility to women on a spectrum running from prescription of desired behaviour to simple ridicule"

She’s wrong in her conclusion about drag. It doesn’t prescribe, ridicule or parody women, but challenges men’s reaction to/expectations of women.

Drag usual portrays strong, forthright, outspoken women who get away with things that no one else could say.

Bit like the Jester in mediaeval courts, or the Lord of Misrule at Yule tide.

Of course, but Max didn't mention TG or transitioning as I read it. You introduced both of those and then started having a debate with yourself about it being offensive.

You need to go back and read what I wrote.

Trannie is offensive. It stands for TV, not TG or someone who performs in drag.

It’s Max and you that are confusing terms.
