Then this advert shows up for me at the bottom of the page. 😂

ETA: I wonder what Mad Uncle Ronnie would have made of it all.

Pay a subscription fee and you don’t get adverts (which are based on what your computer/phone has decided you like)

This is silly.  The Guild is constantly introducing new classes and categories in response to changing tastes and circumstances.  For example they've introduced a new class for community choirs this year as well.

The introduction of Community Choirs is relevant and particularly as the island has promoted choir singing contests, may encourage choirs from the UK to come over to compete.

Perhaps there was demand from the audiences. That tends to be why things get added/removed, rather than any sort of political interests.

Yea, like we have dozens of drag acts on the island, let alone 13 year old ones. I've only ever had the misfortune to witness two of them in action, and to be fair - compared to some of the UK professional ones, they were both (to use drag parlance) fucking shite.

I'll tolerate absolutely anything except folk music.

Drag artists performing to folk would be a ring of hell.

But, while we supporting 'artists' who perform gross caricatures of people who suffer from daily bias, are we going to have a minstrel section?

No, I thought not.

I lived in Brighton for years, I've seen drag acts. It's a one joke performance imho, unless the performer is genuinely funny. I would argue that it's adult entertainment, often sexualised, and that opening it up to 13 yr olds (Do not make that joke) is going to lead to arguments.

I'll get the popcorn out, the debate will probably be more entertaining then the performances.

Since the competition rules state the performance should be for a family audience and costumes are optional, an Elvis impersonator could probably enter. What is meant by drag isn't very well specified here. It's basically like an old variety show turn.

Elvis impersonators, now what a boon that would be for the Guild,  well we already have Politician impersonators in the Keys. 🤔

I too looked at the syllabus.

Elvis is fine, that’s a drag king thing.

Drag, dressing as the opposite gender in an exaggerated manner, for comedic, theatrical, dramatic effect has a long history in English performing art.

Panto has its principal boys and dames and ugly sisters. Pub drag or from the music halls had some real stars. Even variety on TV with Danny La Rue, and later Lilly Savage.

The Disappointer Sisters  at the Casino or Falcon Cliff for several seasons.

I don’t think it’s sexist in the way blackface is racist.

Scoring it if costume is optional  seems odd. The essence of drag is the costume, the makeup, the mannerisms, the patter, the comedy, the challenge to societal norms ( that’s the subversion ) and the singing - not lipsynching.

As for the family audience suitability I’m assuming that innuendo will be allowed. “10 miles to London, and still no dick” type of thing?

Ive not seen much local drag recently. I went to one or two shows and found the performance poor and all the singing was mimed.

Recently saw Cabaret in London, part of the fun was working out which of the KitKat Club “girls” were boys. Same in La Cage aux Folles, which I’m seeing as “La Jaula de las Locas” in a couple of weeks.
