Gormless Git
So, the Manxman is delayed as stated in the IOMSP blog: “Testing carried out by Manxman’s builders during routine sea trials revealed that additional work will be required to ensure Manxman is up to the rigorous specification set out by Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. The works will be carried out by the contractors and shipyard IOMSPC has engaged to build the vessel. This will be followed by further sea trials. These additional works will have an impact on the delivery timeline of the vessel to IOMSPC in South Korea and subsequently its arrival in Manx waters” Current timetable shows the first Manxman crossings are scheduled from June 16th. The rumour mill seems to be suggesting that the gearbox issue is rather more than has been reported and that a new prop-shaft is required. This is to be manufactured in Germany and shipped to South Korea for a complex replacement procedure and talk of delay of one year is expected… Does anyone have any accurate knowledge of what the real situation is and are we to expect Manxman to not be in service much before TT-2024? The original 1st scheduled sailings were 27/5 ( I think ) but with random increasingly frequent familiarisation sailings ( in place of Ben’s schedule ) from late April. So they’re predicting a 3 week delay, at the moment. it’s not going to make any difference as they only booked passengers, cars and cabins up to Ben capacity. Ben’s dry docking and annual inspection and overhaul was due after TT when MX would have taken over. It’s now been brought forward to late March. Lets just hope neither Ben nor Mannanan develop issues over TT
TheTeapot
Fairly long running steam packet thread in which this is already being discussed. Again.

Dave Hedgehog
If the DoI were involved it wouldn't have had sea trials and would currently be adrift somewhere in the Pacific. 1

I think Gov just has its own run of bad luck, this being one of them. Lessons have been learnt though!
finlo
I thought the whole idea of electric final drives is that it does away with propshafts and their associated vibrations?

0bserver
As long as it's good to go when it finally gets here then it's all good. It is weird though how it seems any big scheme in any country isn't capable of being completed on time and on schedule (HS2 and Hinckley Point being two). If it was DOI commissioned it would be just like the SNP ferries. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-64609542

Banker
I posted recently but told by reliable source that it probably won’t be arriving until probably July as it is getting a new shaft & gear box at steam packet insistence and at no cost to them.

Have to say the modular design makes sense. Being able to park the engines where it's convenient means they're easy to replace while the drives and propshafts remain in situ.
