Union leader still raving!

What she said is exactly what every single person in here has said in the past and that is how can we possibly plan to attract thousands of people here when the infrastructure supporting existing residents is falling apart. She thinks the government should get that in order before contemplating any increase in population. And yet, reading this thread it would appear that she’s talking rubbish.

If only she wasn’t a she. Or looked better. Or had a different accent. Or wore different clothes. Or wasn’t in a position of power, as a woman.

In which case you’d all be behind her?

She an odious throw back to some Alan Bleasdale 1980s drama.

Your opinion may or may not be accurate: and I know it’s hard to hear one of your “hate figures” speaking some truth.   But surely you can’t really disagree with the content of what she said?   Where is the sense in spending £100m to attract an extra 15k residents when current services, infrastructure, etc are inadequate for the current population?   Just to focus on health: why spend £100m to make the situation about 17% worse?   Or are you confident that current health provision could just absorb these extra people?

(eta: crossed over with Roxy - same point, really)

Unions are an outdated conception. Everything they’re ever involved with suffers. The added red tape they cause due to organizations due to their own needs to justify their existence is outrageous. Why should local authorities pay employees, who when recruited by the unions, to work for the unions in normal business hours? No wonder the vast majority of private businesses don’t entertain them. Everything they get involved with hinders progress. Look at the pig headed ness of their reps over here. They actually enjoy causing trouble

Unions have been, still are and always will be, necessary to protect employees rights.

But just like any other organisation  ( if not more so than most) they need good and articulate leadership.

This lady just comes across as a harridan, and does nothing to advance the teachers cause, quite the opposite in fact.

Absolute rubbish as usual. Well done. Trying to make it about being misogynistic (an invention by you as I even compared to Moffatt another useless shouter) rather than about her being a generally hideous 80s throw back character who is destroying the reputation of her Union by basically being a hopeless big mouth who nobody seems to be paying any attention to.

Here's Phil explaining the Manx Budget.
Remember folks - if you don't keep pouring vast sums of money into the farmers' bank accounts then we can't grow food, and we need food to live, and we'll all die if we cut the grants.

But is she wrong?

There was a post on FB a couple of days ago from a healthcare worker who moved here 7 years ago with every intention of staying.  They have had successive rented homes, losing each because the owner decided to sell.  They can't save enough for a deposit to buy, because of the private sector rent, and are just over the maximum earnings to qualify for public sector accommodation.  They are left with the only choice of returning to wherever they are from even though they really want to stay.

Now it may or may not have been genuine, but it certainly has the ring of truth.

This is what needs to be addressed.  Pretty views are not going to put an affordable roof over your head.

Ms O'Neill is right. Health services, education and housing all need to be improved. You can't just say, 'We want a world-class health service' and it happens by magic.

The government seems to wear rose coloured glasses when in comes to infrastructure. The rest of us look around and see neglected roads and buildings.

Why do people keep questioning the government wanting to spend to attract people here when the infrastructure isn’t in place, when they have openly stated that the 100m is to put the infrastructure in place to support the extra population.

Building a new school and and increasing DESC budget, increased budgets across pretty much all departments and people still moan.

I really can’t get my head around people objections to a larger population.

Question.  Would the island be a better or worse place to live if we knocked the population back to 70k?

I heard that two Filipino health workers and their families have walked for the very same reason outlined above.

The "Plan" to increase the population is going nowhere until and unless the housing situation is rectified. The Good Doctor needs to get out more.
