Building a new school and and increasing DESC budget, increased budgets across pretty much all departments and people still moan. I really can’t get my head around people objections to a larger population. Question. Would the island be a better or worse place to live if we knocked the population back to 70k? Depends which 10k we got rid of.

We’ve been on that road for sometime mainly because of Government’s actions/inaction.

Oh well, if the GOVERNMENT have openly stated it, then it MUST be true. I’ll await with interest to see: how much is actually spent; what it’s actually spent on; and how many people move here as a direct consequence of that spending. And, while we’re waiting, we can watch the health service and the rest going down the shunkie for the remaining 85k population…
Sheldon
It's a bit chicken and egg, but consider the options: 1. Somehow attract an extra 20k people and don't update the supporting infrastructure fast enough = we're screwed. 2. Update the supporting infrastructure and nobody comes = better facilities for current residents but at a higher cost. 3. Update the supporting infrastructure and 20k new people flood in - well, that's the plan, although arguably we're then back where we started. (See option 4.) 4. The old business case favourite, "Do nothing". How's that one working out for us presently? There are no doubt a few shades of grey missing from the above list, but option 1 looks the worst. On the plus side, the chances of it happening are pretty slim.

The tax cap was the catalyst to quite a lot of people looking to relocate who ultimately didn’t bother because: 1 - The planning process is a nightmare and they couldn’t find houses they liked, or build them. 2 - Government red tape when actively trying to relocate and/or setup businesses. 3 - Lack of decent bars and restaurants. 4 - Flight times to and from the island. 5 - Lack of quality workforce. 3,4 and 5 would become less of an issue with more residents.
