In the past year it has become 20% more expensive to live here. Youngsters, and even 40 yr old workers, are being financially cleansed from the island. In 10 years time a lot of businesses won't be here anymore. We need a residency act...and to stop importing retirees. I calculated today that taxation wise including rates, it is costing me about 9k a year more to live in the UK There's not much by way of money saved on food etc. So I still reckon it is cheaper to live on the IOM

immortalpuppet
Victory cafe - seems to be doing well and some amazing reviews, sounds like a great success considering it’s a cafe on the mountain! Douglas Quay - The brewery focusing on entertainment around the Railway/Saddle/Oscars areas. I’m a big fan of the pub culture so I hope that they continue to expand their thinking for this part of town. Hawkins BBQ - recently jumped in with Foraging Vintners down south, sounds like a great partnership. Mad Jacks - slightly away from the axe throwing they have been putting on some niche music nights and have some more in the pipeline. Indy/alt music scene stuff but good fun all the same. code99
The IOMG 2023-24 Budget shows that in 2022-23 financial year the annual structural deficit (the difference between the cash that come into to government coffers and the cash that goes out) was expected to be circa £144m. For 2023-24 financial year, they are budgeting a structural deficit of circa £158m. In later years of the Budget, they are forecasting that the annual structural deficits will reduce to circa £5m annually. But what if the assumptions underlying the largely unexplained decline in structural deficits turn out to be too optimistic and instead of falling, the annual structural deficits keep ballooning upwards? There is little justification in the 2023-24 Budget about why the projected reductions in the annual structural deficits will occur. The so called “billion and a half” in Reserves is mostly a measure of how much is in the National Insurance Fund. This Fund is supposed to be a long-term ‘Reserve’ that will pay out state pensions for the next few decades - will the IOMG find ‘justifications’ to tap into the National Insurance Fund to pay its regular bills? Any new investment in the Island will be good, but will a handful of new e-gambling (or other sector) companies which are registered here, pay little tax here and don’t employ very many people here either, channel additional revenues to the IOMG’s coffers i.e. sufficient money to restore the government’s leaky finances and thereby enable residents to benefit from the levels of government services they are accustomed to? Some people think that Crogga’s endeavours will become the panacea that the Island desperately needs. But, even if Crogga do raise enough money to be able to drill, and they do find a huge reservoir of natural gas, will the flow rates be sufficient to make the deposit commercially viable? And then, even if the deposit proves to be commercially viable, will it be viable enough to channel the £150m/ year into IOMG coffers? I am not trying to be negative, just realistic and expressing my genuine concerns for the future of the Island. 5

Dirty Buggane
See above, someone has woke up and realised that pot of money we did not know what it was for and been used to pay to balance the books. And let's not forget the jollies and pet schemes and other shite, was infact the NI fund go figure. You would of thought some one would of put a note in iou 780million pounds and say what it was. Genuine question. We like eating out, socialising and supporting businesses. Gaming and cannabis applications were discussed at the economic strategy update at the museum this week. I don’t have links but am sure the info is out there somewhere if you look hard enough.
