You may want to pay a fine but most of those sentenced are repeat offenders, don’t have any money as on benefits so they can’t pay any fine other than deductible from benefits over many years.

I never understand that.

Taxpayer pays criminals fine?

So is this a knock-on effect from the UK prisons or is it a genuine local problem?

The first we have litttle to no say in and it doesn't appear to be a short-term problem even if they start letting them out early.

The second is more concerning given the leaders stated goal of increasing the island population if after 16 years in use the newish prison is already overflowing.

Hopefully it is just a blip and not a long term problem.

The biggest problem when it comes to re-offending is the lack of support and opportunities once someone is released back into society. Offenders mostly dont have anywhere else to go bar a halfway home , employers wont take them on because they have a criminal record so end up looking for other ways to support themselves which more often that that is crime. Voila.. back inside again.

No the biggest problem with re offending is that offenders are often scumbags.

We know that prison doesn't work and yet we still keep sending people there.

Lots more early intervention and preventative work needed.

'Whether for violence, public disorder or wage theft – there is no shortage of calls for more people to be sent to prison, and for longer.

However, decades of research have shown that prison is the least effective place to rehabilitate offenders. Studies have indicated that a stint in prison increases the likelihood that inmates will reoffend.'

Unemployed drug dealer pays fine.  Does this make the IOM Govt complicit in money laundering?

But anyway, shit's going down at the prison.

Apparently the Prison has been screaming out for an extension to be built for a few years now, but no Govt funds allocated, hence the portacabin Plan B.

It's all a bit stupid by the looks of it. Everyone I know or have met who works at the prison can't wait to get out of the place these days.

Presumably further police legal action to follow for those inmates involved?

They'll probably ask if any members of the public caught anything on their dashcams in about a month.
