That may be, but the Magistrates said it was a pity he didn't get on the boat when instructed by the police.

All very strange.

The press reported them as saying that is very different to them actually saying that.

If true it begs the question where he stayed/slept and how he supported himself on Island for 17 days.

The other thing is that the reporting says he’ll be escorted to the boat when released from prison. Except there is no power to move off Island until 23 August and he’ll be out of prison on 31/7 or 1/8.

It’s not very ‘joined up’, is it?

It probably hasn't been a problem to deal with since the introduction of the welfare state.   Wonder when it was last enforced.

It’s based on the English 1824 one, which is still in force in England

Since we're using Victorian legislation, could we bring back the treadmill as a judicial punishment? Beggars, petty criminals and uppity journalists could produce green electricity for the cost of occasionally feeding them.

Don't forget useless MHK's - we could then sell electricity to UK

Or bring in laws about looking at me in a funny way, walking on the cracks in the pavement, loitering with intent to use a pedestrian crossing or wearing a loud shirt in a built up area during the hours of darkness.

Is it a problem to bring them into the 21st Century John?

No. But modern wording won’t change the thrust. The fact the wording is old fashioned doesn’t make it any the less functional.

The 1824 wording was replaced and modernised in Scotland about 40 years ago. It’s being updated in England under a Police, Crime, Sentencing Act 2022. They’re waiting to sort out regulations covering homelessness and rough sleeping ( which is closely related to begging ) and provision of night shelters and accommodation. There’s a cost. Inevitably. So it’s prioritisation and carts and horses.

Most of our serious criminal offences are contained in the 1872 Criminal Code.

And another one. English this time. Only got 2 days custody, plus an exclusion order. Found sleeping in a sleeping bag outside sea terminal. Not enough money to get a ticket home.

Why is this only happening now, do you think?  Do they really think the boat fare is worth it for what they will get when they get here?

It is really strange.

They're all secretly patsies, they've actually been paid to be here and get arrested so that the police can get their way and make you need a passport to get on the boat.
