You'd think they'd have figured out a way to harness the wind generated by all those waving dicks by now. It's steadier and more reliably present than natural wind. Yet another missed opportunity.

I thought they the big professional consultancy company only had one monitoring unit. On one site for a year then move it to other site for a year, fuck me these things must be costly to build if they can only afford one. Or is it the rental costs they are bound to be charging at many thousands per year. We could always get some youngster off the dole que  to stand there with a plastic windmill and an exercise book with a 2hb pencil writing down how fast it is spinning, pay the living wage and it will be cheaper and just as accurate as what the snake oil salesman are selling the simpletons in the echelons of government/civil service. Thoe the job was probley nodded through on the back nine of the King Edward golf course before a sumptuous lunch. The firm of course picking up the chicken feed tab.

If we only require 8 turbines (according to the gospel of Happier Diner) then they should all be in one place and offshore.

It's going to be a logistical nightmare getting turbines on hillsides that don't have road access (and even if they do they won't be wide enough or strong/sound enough to take the weight).

To the east and southeast of this Island are veritable forests (navigation hazards) of wind turbines.

Why can 'we' not simply hive off (buy or hire) half a dozen of these and have their output routed to the Island?

Await Miserable Diner, whom I'd like his declaration of vested interest in polluting the Island with these windmills, to come up with a trillion reasons why this couldn't be done.

How have they originally selected these locations when they've only just installed the monitoring equipment to establish whether or not they are suitable? Surely the right way would have been to install monitoring equipment at various, multiple locations and then select the most suitable based on the data received?

Rather than saying, "Right, they're going to be at these two points" and then deciding to assess the suitability of those points. All a bit cart before horse methinks.

Or are they already discounting more suitable locations on the nimby grounds?

Surely IOMG through its various departments, has collective weather records, reports and statistics for the island? Also besides the airport, would any other location have meteorology equipment to monitor weather, patterns etc? I would imagine that the Sea Terminal and Harbour would, along with other working ports such as Peel, and Ramsey. Is there any weather measuring equipment on Snaefell?

Maybe it’s a map and a pin being stuck in, by someone in the office blindfolded.

This has all become madness, in my view a decent proposal would be to tag on half a dozen wind generators to an existing proposed wind farm being planned for the Irish Sea, close to our island. Run a cable to the island and job done, no ecological issues!

This is kyboshed by the government's sheepish insistence that we have our own wind generation by 2026!

Yes and no.  They do have data from most of the Harbour Weather stations.  However the main point of the proposed areas is that they are in the arse end of nowhere, so hopefully not too many nimbys will be able to put together a coherent case to moan about them.  So no measurements have been taken in those places historically, as no need.

It used to be really useful site via the met office, but about 6 months ago, some bright spark completely changed layout, datasets and combined it with with the joke Floodhub site, to make it completely illegible on a mobile - thanks once again DOI.

What they are proposing does make sense.  You need irrefutable data to confirm the chosen sites, rather than some dude saying 'it's really windy here' they build the turbines and then find out some weird product of the topography has created a really sheltered spot or something.
